Subject: Knights of Blood DoA list @ 2k.

Irked Blood Angel Scout with Combat Knife

Hi all.
I've been playing around with a DoA list for... probably since the codex came out, so a while.
This is the latest incarnation I thought up this morning, so let me know what you think.
Alighieri the Squall - 275 pts.
Honor guard w. jump packs, 2 meltaguns, 2 lightning claws, 3 storm shields - 275 pts.
5 Sanguinary Guard - 200 pts.
2 Sanguinary Priests w. jump packs - 150 pts.
10 Assault Marines w. 2 meltaguns - 210 pts.
10 Assault Marines w. 2 meltaguns - 210 pts.
10 Assault Marines w. infernus pistol and flamer - 210 pts.
5 Vanguard Veterans w. powerfist and 3 storm shields - 235 pts.
5 Vanguard Veterans w. powerfist and 3 storm shields - 235 pts.
Total: 2000 pts.
Alighieri is my personal character that I build a few months before the new book came out, and counts as the Sanguinor. I ordinarily hate to use special characters, but in the new Dex if you want a character with actual kit, you have to use a special character, and there aren't rules for a Librarian Lord (NOT Mephiston) so I guess we're stuck. If you saw the model, you'd say 'yeah, that guy looks like he costs 275 points.' I assure you though, that if I COULD take a 200 point Librarian with 3 wounds, that's what he would be.
Anyways, the assault squads are a little wonky, but I wanted to fit in as many bodies as possible so I had to make wargear sacrifices in order to have 50 guys, and I still have 4 really solid melee units in the Honor Guard, Sanguinary Guard and 2 VVet squads. The RAS squads are there for torrenting, and having a Coutns-As Sanguinor really helps in that capacity. In other lists I try to work them around so I can take advantage of the special weapons each squad can take, but here I'm just trying to reach for more bodies. Every guy I can fit in is one more that I can give FNP, FC, and +1A to. I realize this is counter-intuitive with 4 200+ point squads, but it's a ballancing act in taking squads that are elite melee units backed-up by guys with barely any gear to absorb wounds and provide efficiency.
So, ignoring my rambling, tell me what you think!
All the best,
Timff8

I would give the assault marines some sort of cc weapon as they will suffer in cc without one. Let's face it they will enter cc but against a tactical squad with a powerfist say you may struggle.
You do not have enough shooting coverage. Some units need to be shot rather than charged. Usually it is good to take 4 weapons in an honour guard for this or even typhoons or landspeeders.

The mix of units makes for a pretty good list, as I see it. I personally think the Sanguinor is too expensive, but whatever.
The problem I see is that you're spending too much for Storm Shields. In all, you have 9 of them, for a total of 180 points. You really need a Power Fist in each non-Honor Guard squad, which you could make happen by going down to 1 Power Fist in each VV squad and cutting them from the Honor Guard completely. You'd also have the points to have 4 Meltaguns in the Honor Guard, and I see them working best as simply dudes with special weapons. You'd still have the same model count.

The Sanguinor is a bit expensive at 275, I agree. I think he should be more like 250. But, he does give you a LOT for that. The fact that you get another character essentially is proabably worth 30 or so points, so that makes him more like 245, which is pretty good. Unlike most 275 point rocks (Marneus, Draigo) he's very maneuverable with a JP and DoA, so you can be sure he gets to tear someone up. In a list that is all about CC, Aura of Fervor is really pulling its weight too, so for a hard-ass character that gives you another character and makes all units around him 25-33% deadlier, he's pretty decent.
I've moved some stuff around, so let me know what you think.
MKII:
Alighieri the Squall - 275 pts.
Honor Guard: Jump Packs, 2 meltaguns, 2 lightning claws, 3 storm shields – 275 pts.
5 Sanguinary Guard – 200 pts.
2 Sanguinary Priests with jump packs - 150 pts.
10-man Assault Squad: 2 Marines with meltaguns - 210 pts.
10-man Assault Squad: Sergeant w. power weapon, 2 Marines with meltaguns - 225 pts.
10-man Assault Squad: Sergeant w. power fist, 2 Marines with meltaguns - 235 pts.
5 Vanguard Veterans: Jump packs; Sergeant w. power fist and storm shield,
2 Veterans w. storm shields - 235 pts.
5 Vanguard Veterans: Jump packs; Sergeant w. lightning claw, 2 Veterans w. power weapons – 195pts.
Total: 2000 pts.
I am really loathe to strip down the Honor Guard, as I spent a lot of time converting them from Sanguinary Guard to look really super-cool. They're really the linch-pin of the army to me, as they give you melta coverage outside of Assault Squads and have a priest you can't target in CC. That's really why I want to give them the means to survive a long time. They're really the conter-ballance to the Sanguinary Guard, who are there to be entirely an offensive unit and don't really care if they die as long as they make it splashy.
The idea to strip down one VVeteran squad to a more streamlined kit was something I had toyed with in the past. I really like Storm Shields, and figured that I might need as many as possible to take advantage ot my ability to have them on mulitple units, but I can see that variety in unit ability is also great. Someteims I don't need two tarpit units, especially against armies that have no rocks to stick in them. So, out they go for the second load-out. I couldn't fit a special weapon for CC on all of the RAS squads, but it's only one, and the rest of the army is geared to the teeth for it. I guess that can be the squad that Alighieri pals around with. I know he can't join them, but that will be the squad he jumps into combats with to shield him from getting over-exposed.
Thanks a ton for the input.
