Greetings Dakka,

I find myself removed from any club or local gaming store, and I'm going through some withdrawal.

I've downloaded the client and module but have no clue what the next step is or what to do even. So I ask you, the 40k players of Dakka, do you play Vassal? Do you find Vassal a suitable alternative to real tabletop gaming? Do you enjoy Vassal? And last but not least, how do I find games and/or someone to run me through a couple of games?

I know there's nothing that can replace pushing around nicely painted models and squaring off against a worthy opponent, but for those isolated from the gaming world, would Vassal prove sufficient?

Any tips/tricks/anecdotes/game offers appreciated.

on the forum. Obviously

No. Vassal is nowhere near as good as the TT version. It is however good for getting the feel of an army.

While I'm not 100% sure on how to find games (never used it for online play, myself) but as a tool for playing games during a drought, it's fantastic. Now, I want to go ahead and say that no, it's not as good as the tabletop version, but I use it to test out new army concepts without buying models, or more often, play games against armies less played at the FLGS. It can be funny as heck to make two armies you don't know how to use and run them against each other to see what happens.

There's really not much to getting into the module itself - open up Vassal, and click File > Open Module... and navigate to where the downloaded module file is. It should be something like Vassal40k.vmod. Open that module, and it should appear in the list of Vassal mods, so you only need to look for it once. Following that, hit play offline or play online to get into games. For army construction, clicking on Player 1/Player 2 opens up the space to drag models, and going into Models opens up the catalogue of models that the mod has to offer. Just search through the section (it's sorted by Army, then by Force Organization slot - and Marine variants are all under Space Marines), and drag and drop models by dragging the image of the model itself into the Player 1/2 fields.

Open up the board by clicking Table, and put some terrain on it (all found in the Models tab), set up deployment, and you're good to go. It seems like a daunting program at first, but once you get used to it, it's not too bad. And as a helpful hint, you can hit the F keys (F1, F2, etc.) to quick-roll different numbers of dice. Handy for when you want to quickly go through a single shot or attack.

Yeah, I figure nothing can quite replace the feel of pushing lead around a table.

Thanks for the help. I guess I just need to muck around with it and see what does what. Cheers!
