Everyone know that melee combat is better in most aspects. On the table-top it lets you wipe a whole unit with only one kill because of sweeping advance. And in the fluff, it's always more heroic to stab that Ork Warboss in the face or chop off that heretics face then it is to drop him from a mile away with a Stalker silenced bolt round.

But is there any Chapter that uses ranged combat more than it does close-combat? I know of only one, and its the Raptors.

The Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors rely more on heavy weapons than other chapters I believe.

That doesn't necessarily mean that they "prefer ranged combat" however.

Imperial Fists are renowned swordsmen, and Iron Warriors are known as fantastic tacticians.

Heavy weapons just kind of goes with their "specialties" of siege warfare. That's why they rely more upon them, at least when they're actively engaged in sieges. Otherwise they fight like every other Astartes Chapter/Chaos Warband does: with whatever tool fits the job.

Star Phantoms.

Love sieges, gunlines, and tons of Devastators.
"The Chapter also seemed to prefer long ranged bombardment using heavy weaponry over the chaos of melee, though is capable of the latter when tactically expedient to do so.
Instead of having two Devastator Squads per Battle Company as per Codex norm, the Star Phantoms instead have three squads of Devastators. These warriors have gained a reputation for being indiscriminate in their use of the firepower under their disposal, inflicting massive collateral damage, to the point where the Lord Solar Macharius himself is to have stated that the Chapter was "Unsuitable for tactical close support of other Imperial Units".3j
The Chapter's armory maintains an abundance of Plasma and Melta-based weaponry, and indeed it is a mark of honor among the Chapter's leaders to go into battle using a combi-plasma or combi-melta wrought by the Chapter's Techmarines."

Great Chapter, they also struck the last blow in the Badab War, breaching Hurons fortress and meltagunning him down.

Not funny.

Just kidding

And yes, I include artillery and siege warfare to be ranged as long as they aren't charging into combat under the cover of a bombardment, leave that the DKK

I also remembered another chapter, the Salamanders supposedly favour close-range fight fights with their signature weapons: meltas and flamers.

Being a fantastic tactician doesn't mean you don't do a lot of ranged combat. Unless your killing them with your awesome ideas.

I always figured they did more melee because most xenos (and many Chaos warbands) rely on melee, not to mention their physical power that doesn't benefit them as much at range.

How about the Ultramarines? They have many weapons that do best from afar.

we just suggested a chapter. The Star Phantoms are probably the best bet plus they all have spectre faces.
Ultramarines are all a rounders, they are good at everything which is their problem they are adept at everything but they aren't experts like the Spectres.

Ultramarines are literally the posterboys for a Chapter that prefers no style over anything else. They are absolutely balanced, as the Codex demands.

Dang, I was writing my post when the Star Phantoms was suggested (so I just read it).

They sound like the best choice.

(And yes, the Ultramarines are the most well-rounded, which makes them more ranged specialized than many other Chapters that have their own codex, if that makes any sense.)

I believe the mantis warriors also like ranged fighting over hand to hand fighting, but I could be wrong.

Not sure on that. I know they are superb guerilla and hit and run fighters, but I can't find anything about their preference in regards to range. Probably whatever works.

I seem to remember them liking whirlwinds, and snipers, and i think they get a bonus to sternguard veterans. But again i could be dead wrong.
