So I've started painting up a couple of Space Marine items, but I keep looking at other chapter colours and thinking "ahh ffs, that looks so much better", or "they have nicer models" or "they have better fluff". So I'm interested to start a discussion on your thoughts on each Chapter, which you collect, why you collect it, what your favourite chapter is, any cool colour schemes you've come across (with images if possible), and what fluff you like about each chapter.

Please, feel free to take up as much space on this thread as you need to put your thoughts over, I'm interested to know what you think.

(If anyone's interested, I started painting up a Fire Lords colour scheme chapter, that was an off-shoot of the Ultramarines. Turns out that I don't like that scheme any more, now looking at Red Scorpions).

Possibly a 40K discussion this...

...but yes, the endless wrangling of which colour scheme to use applies to many armies. I guess it's amplified with Space Marines because of the different chapters and the various special rules/units that apply to each one (in regards to the big four). The only advice I can give is to pick one, stick with it and you'll probably be quite pleased once a few units are done.

Well, I've had a hard time choosing a paint scheme as well, and I do flip-flop between colors quite regularly. However, one army that has always stuck to me was the Iron Fists. Something about them, I love the paint scheme, like Grey Knights, but cooler. And the only known fluff is that they have storm shields shaped like gauntlets, which I find awesome. Not sure who they are an offshoot of, its said Iron Hands and Imperial Fists, equally, but I kinda thought they fit more as Imperial Fist offshoots. So I think of them as combinations of the Black Templar and Imperial Fists, fluff and manner-wise.

That's a damn nice looking model. I had thought about going down the grey knights route but, I dunno... block silver? I think I want something a little unusual.

I just came across the death watch, and love that fluff - it's exactly what I'm looking for. Think I might just spin the main colour off to something else though, see what we get.

Still interested in hearing from others, don't take this reply as me calling an end to the discussion

I started with GK (I know, bandwagon) because I fell in love with how the terminators look, and I like the idea of a few elite units against a horde of enemies. I am a fan of their color scheme and the variations. I've seen people paint them straight silver, bluish silver, straight blue, I think there are some brass looking ones floating around Dakka as well.

More recently, I got into BA because I enjoy their classic paint scheme. Easy to pull off and looks striking.

I've been looking at the Sons of Orar for pretty much for the same reason. Wanted to make use of all those ultramarine models out there (particularly the FW dreadnoughts) but didn't want to make "just another smurf army".

With you on GK's though, the models are mint - have you got any painted up? (wanders off to investigate your gallery)

I myself run Salamanders, although I enjoy painting single models in the colors of other Chapters just for the heck of it. I picked the Chapter I play specifically for the ease of painting. Originally I wanted to play Imperial Fists. (Turns out, yellow is the hardest color to paint.) So after a few weeks of painting frustration, I decided I would play White Scars instead. (Guess what the second hardest color to paint is?) And so I asked a friend (who paints for comission) "What's the easiest color to paint?" After a moment, he said "probably green." And I said to myself, "Self, I guess you're playing Salamanders." Because I already had the Space Marine Codex and the Dark Angels were out of the question. So, there you have it.

I do use the Ultramarine special characters. (I'm especially fond of Telion.) I just file the Ultra symbols off of them, and we're all golden.

Chapters I've seen that are awesome include Doom Eagles, Fire Lords, Hawk Lords, Sons of Orar, and Carcharodons.

I went Crimson Fist mainly because I first hesitated between Imperial Fists and Salamander... however, I also intended to go ork one day, so the idea of painting an entire army of green marine followed by green ork felt kinda meh... way to much green basically.

Imperial Fist... well, some test run with yellow didn't turn out too well. So I settled on CF. I actually do like the lore of the Crimson Fist and they have a pretty fun IC.

However, if I had to redo-it I'd make a custom chapter. It really suck to be looked at as a WAAC player because I want to try my CF has BA or SW while the guy with a custom chapter (or worse, who didn't even paint his guys) can do it without anybody raising an eyebrow.

First, my guys were painted like Ultramarines. Then, I changed them to a custom chapter I had made up. This was changed because I got tired of people asking if they were Space Wolves. After that, they were painted as Ultramarines again. Now I've finally decided to paint them as Novamarines.

Well I collect a homebrew chapter but I did consider collecting Crimson Fists before I came up with a color scheme of my own. I like their fluff and Pedro is one of my favorite characters to field. I use him in my chapter but naturally renamed and painted in my chapter colors.

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

Up untill recently, I thought if I collected marines it would be White Scars. I like the idea of a swift, FA based force-and they are seldom seen. White doesn't scae me that much-and they look great.

However, I really like the fluff behind the Soul Drinkers:

Plus purple and gold seems like it'd look great..

I use my own paintscheme but I really like the Black Templars simple black and white scheme.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Same here, Telion was one of the Characters that made me want to start up a force. My original plan was to do nothing but scouts, an entire 10th company made up scout bikers, scout speeders, the lot. Turns out that wouldn't be so great in a fight!

Not having done it myself before, how easy would you say it is to cleanly remove chapter markings and replace it with something else?

That reads as 100% awesome!

Oh it does, here's a picture of one of my dark eldar in pure purple and golden goodness. Even with noob painting skill, the colours themselves meld so nicely

See, I collected Black Templars years ago, before they even had their own 'dex, and if it weren't for that (and the thought of having to / wanting to buy an upgrade pack to make them LOOK like BT's) then I'd be tempted to take them on again now. I will DEFINITELY be kit bashing a unit of sword brethren though, fo' shizzle.
