Guys at the local shop swear that Predators and Razorbacks are Rhino kits with extra bits to make turrets, sponsons, etc.
Isn't the Rhino a separate, distinct kit?

The guys at the shop are correct.

Isn't kind of odd to sell a kit that only differs by the addition of a couple of sprues?

Cuts costs and gives a uniformity to the army as a whole. Saves the need to have a separate set of moulds for the chassis of the pred/razor. It's why people say to always buy the razorback over the rhino as you get an extra sprue for the same price.

There's nothing odd about it.

Business-wise, GW can produce lots and lots of Rhino sprues and package it with Predator/Razorback "upgrade" sprues and call it a kit.

Fluff-wise, it makes sense for a tried-and-true chassis (Sherman, Bradley, etc) to house different weaponry.

They're all built upon the Sherman Tank Chasis.

By the way, in case you didn't notice, the Imperial Guard, Eldar, and Tau do this too.

Well, you can't beat the upgrade for a $2 difference anyway. From a fluff perspective, Space Marines use the same tank chassis for rhinos, predators, vindicators, whirlwinds, and razorbacks as it's easy to manufacture and possible to alter/customize in the field. From a real-life perspecitve, GW (and us, the players) like them for the same reason.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Odd, this side of the pond the razor's £20.50, same as a rhino. Oh well, GW and their mad pricing XD.

Lesson 1: Never buy Rhino kits.

Lesson 2: Read more tank history.

For example the Panzerkampfwagen IV not only had ten different version, but the Sturmgeschütz IV, Jagpanzer IV, Brummbär, Wirbelwind, Ostwind, Möbelwagen, Panzerbeobachtungswagen IV and some support vehicles all are variants of it.
