Alright, so the general gist of things is that my brother used to play WH40k, but he quit the game quite a number of years ago. He kept his miniatures though, and I eventually acquired them. I was supposed to pay him for them, but I never did, and I'd like to square things with him in that regard.

I ended up incorporating his minis into my collection months ago, so it's hard to recall just what was included. To the best of my memory though, it had:

~80 Guardsmen including officers, sergeants, special weapons, and Commissars (Most aren't painted at all, and I'd call it decent condition overall)
~40 Guardsmen on sprues, unbuilt, unpainted.
2 Basilisks (both built, one painted alright, the other unpainted)
3 Leman Russes, including 2 LRBT and 1 Demolisher (Unsure on the condition of these, but I think the LRBTs are decent, but the Demolisher is in poor condition)
1 Chimera in decent condition
A few Ogryns in poor condition
1 Hellhound in poor condition due to a couple of missing metal parts
1 small squad of Stormtroopers in poor condition
1 Sentinel in decent condition

Much of the IG stuff is in bad shape apart from the Cadian Guardsmen, which compose most of the infantry. As for CSM:

2 Chaos Terminator Lords (built but unpainted)
10 Chaos Terminators (Built, unpainted, but with somewhat useless weapons - 2 have heavy flamers and another 2 have reaper autocannons, so I can't field 2 smaller squads of 5)
30 Chaos Space Marines (unbuilt, on sprues)
3 Chaos Rhinos (unpainted, in good condition, may have even been unbuilt on sprues)
1 Chaos Vindicator (unpainted, in good condition)
1 Chaos Land Raider (unpainted, in good condition)
1 Chaos Defiler (unpainted, in good condition)
1 Chaos Space Marine Bike (unpainted, in good condition)

The CSM stuff is in MUCH better condition than the IG stuff, probably because it's more recent and wasn't largely composed of a hand-me-down army from 2002-2003 or so from a fairly terrible hobbyist and painter - at least I was back then, due to inexperience mostly.

Mostly what I wanted from his IG stuff was the Cadian Guardsmen, which were in fairly good condition considering they'd been piled in a box with sprues and codices on top of them for several years. I found a bonus, a rare female Commissar, whose hand I then removed and replaced with a sniper rifle for a WH40k minigame I was working on and abandoned. But I didn't want to pick and choose what I wanted from him, considering he doesn't play at all anymore, and I'd like to give him a fair price. And who knows, one day I might decide I want to clean off the layers of icky paint from the Catachans and Demolisher, and use them. The Chaos stuff is in really good condition, as I believe it was stored separately, and on shelves, rather than crammed into a box. The terminator equipment isn't the best, and the Terminators and Lords weren't built really well, but that's okay.

I'm willing to do the calculations myself, if someone just wants to give me a rough percentage of retail price that stuff should be worth.

Depends on the vintage.
I am willing to go a little higher for specific guard models IF they are the 2nd ed ones, for example.

I've seen similar guard armies go for $350 to $400 (USD).

They're all from 3rd edition onward, barring perhaps an individual model or two.

And what of the Chaos portion?

So how does 400 dollars for the IG stuff, and another 300 for the Chaos stuff sound?

Fair price is such a fluid statement...

If I was selling those lots, I would be looking at getting 50-60% of retail for the Chaos items. Are the Chaos Termies the older metal ones? Those would be less valueable than the new plastics..

The IG, however, probably 25-40% retail overall..

The Chaos Termies are all the newer plastic ones. ^_^ 40mm bases and all.

Edit: At such prices, it adds up to roughly my earlier estimate, though I'd add another 20 dollars onto the Chaos stuff for a total of 720 dollars.

You said that the Defiler was "well built". Is that to mean that the other models are "not well built"?

Well, yes and no. Some are a little icky, just meant that I assembled much of the Defiler myself - I think before I got to it, it was in its separate components, indvidual legs, body, and "head."

The rest of the stuff is reasonably built. Not WELL built, but mostly not terribly built - the Chaos stuff is better off overall than the IG stuff, but the IG stuff works just fine.
