OR

I think the combi weapons on Sternguard are just wasting a fair number of points.

Moreso with the Combi Plasma as they overlap with the Vengeance rounds AP wise and Hellfire round in wounding tougher opponents.

For the Pedro Kantor List for example i would go:

320 - 10 Sternguard Veterans with 2 Melta, Sergeant with Power fist + Melta Bombs, Drop Pod

2 meltas and a power fist are actually pretty good AT already and this loadout on both squads would give you 80 points to spend elsewhere.

An option could be Melta Bombs on all your sergeants for 25points. This will help your AT and can save the squad if they end up locked by an ironclad dreadnought or any walker AV12 or higher.
With the last 55 points, you could take combi off Tac sergeants and be back to 85 pts free. With 85 points you can afford Power fists on all three tac sgts and Melta guns instead of Flamers for two of the squads.

I guess the major use for all of that combi plasma you put in would be versus Terminators and other 2+ save things.
But having Meltabombs and Power Fists on all your sergeants can help alot should Terminators/MC's/Heavy Walkers reach your lines. Also the extra points gained by dropping alot of combi lets you buy re-usable AT weapons

Lastly of you are worried about Terminators, A terminator heavy army often lacks alot of tanks, so you could sacrifice some Melta's for Plasma cannons, which tear through those tightly packed teleporting/unloading Terminators.

Hrrm. I'd like to at least keep the Combi-Plas on the squad, what about around 4 combi Plas, and then drop the Combi Meltas. I do encounter a lot of 2+ armours suprisingly, and plasma cannons can't fire the turn that they arrive. So how about:

340 - 10 Sternguard Veterans with 2 Melta, 4 Combi-Plas, Sergeant with a Powerfist.

That'll give me...uhhh...50 points to work with, which becomes 2 powerfists for the Tac Squad Sergeants, or Meltabombs for everyone.

Your ven dreads appear to have free drop-pods. Might want to take a look at that.

Your Kantor list is not very good. Stay clear of tactical squads that is the use of Kantor.

Combimeltas are great on sternguard. I would go for squads of ten with combimeltas in a drop pod. So you land, combat squad and have 2 lots of 5 melta shots at tanks. Or go for 5 combimeltas and then 2 heavy flamers, so 5 now are antiinfantry.

How do I "stay clear of tactical squads" exactly? It's not like I can choose not to take them.

Vulkan ftw in Drop Pod lists, gets that melta and flamers into range really quickly.

I'd probably go with the second list, but lose the Dreadnought and instead flood the board with Marines. Only armour would be Drop Pods and lets face it once they are down they do nothing. I would also drop the Assault Marines, they are not going to do a fat lot.

Can assault squads take drop pods? I thought only Blood Angels could drop the jump packs to take a drop pod.

At the moment you have voluntarily gone for three squads.

When you could go for three squads of sternguard as scoring and then let's say 9 scouts and telion and a tactical squad. This gives you at least 5 scoring units, with the benefit that Telion can a good position rather than just camp by an objective and you only have to take one tactical squad.
Tactical squads being slightly better than assault squads in my view, but still being one of the worse units in the codex.

Don't know if it fits your style or not, but, you could totally replace one of your tac squad drop pod units and get 2 x 5 sniper scout squads with cloaks and missile launcher for back support (not a lot of back support, but some) for 210 points total.

True. Unfortunately I've decided to swing a completely different direction, and go for a Black Templar force, since the models are so dang beautiful! But thanks for posting, I'm going to pass this along to my friend who was doing a similar thing.
