Or does GW seem to be setting up for something terrible to happen to the SM in 6th ed? Here at the end of M.41, two of the greatest chapters, the Blood Angels and Ultramarines, (they're poster boys for a reason, so no debates about you hate Smurfs) both have their homeworlds/ systems under direct and huge threat, with reinforcements coming in from sucessor chapters. Does this seem to anyone else like something huge is about to go down?

I know it's all grimdark, but it's got me thinking, is it all about to go horrivl wrong for the IoM?

Something horrible is always about to go down.
Although it all depends on if 6e moves forward, remains in the same period, or chooses another historical snapshot of M41

The beginning of the 42'nd millennium is not called "The End times" for nothing.
There will be really difficult times for our beloved Imperium. Worlds will be lost, fleets destroyed, army's slaughtered and as worst of that all - Golden Throne is failing.

On the serious side, nothing really changed, Imperium is still fighting and losing some worlds, save some, liberate some...
Ultramarine homeworld is already being attacked by Nids, and Ultramrines kicked their scally little bug asses. If Ultramarines did that to them I can't imagine what will BLood Angels then do with support from several of their successor chapters with them ( and they have Mephiston who alone tear his way trough main Tyranid invasion force and almost killed Hive Tyrant - with his arms ). Blood Angels will defend themselves if that attack ever came to Baal. As for other part of Leviathan, they are going to Terra. So: Nid burgers anyone

Not quite. It was a few years to midnight a while back. 3rd and 4th edition saw the fluff move forwards to where it has currently stalled... and GW have said they have no intention of moving it any further, at least for now. They have around 10000 years of backstory to flesh out first.

Personally I think it will be super lame if they DON'T move forward with the story. They don't have to go far, but go forward a little, please!

Maybe not have the Golden throne faile but maybe have the AdMech state a 'life expectancy' of like, 5 years, or 2 years or something like that. Have the Tyranid fleets move further and start new wars. Have a general push of xenos into the Imperium (moreso than usual). Give us something.

The Horus Heresy books are giving us all the backstory we need. Move the tabletop forward!

The setting has lasted twenty four years without the timeline advancing; 'contemporary' campaigns and novels are set all over the 41st millennium. Get used to the fact that the metaplot isn't going to advance; it doesn't need to do so.

To address the original question, something bad is always looming on the horizon in Warhammer 40,000. (Or rarther something worse, bad things having already arrived.). The Tyranids have been poised to devour the eastern fringe since Rogue Trader.

First of all stop dissing the Ultramarines and the Blood Angels cuz you will be burnt for heresy. Second of all if the plot actually advances you can not guess a thing. If they(the developers etc.) decide THE GOD may appear and say "Project X10923501 failed." and destroyes this universe.

A bit OT, but how popular are the Ultramarines? I've never actually seen anyone play them, albeit I'm hardly the most widely travelled of players but given their all too perfect and generally hated role, I wouldn't too surprised if something nasty went down in Ultramar. Though as others have said, we are forever partying like its 40,999.

Frankly I don't want them to move on really. Sure abit more crumbling, but major worlds have fallen (Gryphonne IV), Armageddon isn't exporting anymore, the Cadian Gate has been overun albeit at the cost of god knows how much in CSM resoruces, not to mention the heart of the Black Crusade stranded on Cadia itself. Meanwhile I understand it could put others off if the Imperium moves from toppling to collapsed, might get too grimdark. Also it ruins the hinted hopes that a new age of Sensei-Emperor-ness will dawn and be groovy. Frankly I ignore such ideas. I came into 40k to watch humanity burn

They are pretty popular actually. I dont mind them so much but I was making a joke about how often you'll hear people whining about them here. I like making fun of the ultramarines though, my friend of 12 years has played them that whole time so mocking them is fun.

Personally I like their background as the preppy jocks of the Imperium (just not their name/colour scheme), but there is alot of dislike for them out in the aether. Then again it is the internet, there's probably a cabal of sites dedicated to Squat racial slurs.

EDIT: Not keen on starting another thread but have we been tolded what happened on Cadia, what with Chaos mostly in control but cut off from reinforcements by the Navy? Seems a very pyrrhic victory.

The Universe is large. If they want to create a race they can they can add fluff and things infinitely. Just claim the dark gods have created a skew in time and have thus created a different dimension or plain to fight on. Saruthi anyone?

There are already a few other races they could bring in. Or as you said, a rift allowing other armies to leak into the Imperium.

Three facts:

The Imperium is really taking some heavy hits.
The Xenos and Traitors are exposing themselves to the Imperial counter attack.
6th edition will be the most bloody yet.

The fact that the Imperium is being attacked on all sides means that any counter attack would simply weaken their defenses elsewhere.

The Imperium did counterattack, its spent most of M37-M38 launching Crusade after Crusade (Macharius most famously) to undo the damage of the Apostasy. It worked in the short term but ultimately the IoM is not the powerhouse it was under the Emperor and has now overstretched itself. Attempting Great Crusade Mk.II with worse equipment, more enemies and total socio-economic stagnation wasn't Terra's wisest choice. Now with the Tyranids having arrived, any long term efforts to build up the Imperium strength is futile, it can only weaken. Every lasgun produced is met by demand for two more. And every Forge/Hive World lost is irreplacable thanks to techno-religious orthodoxy. It's going down hill, might as well enjoy the ride and pass the ammunition.

the Caiphas Cain novels make it seem like there is a big shake down... but then everything is actually better off when the dust settles for the IoM (hints at Tyranids and Necrons being severely blunted after some sort of horrible war, and some sort of IoM revival/recovery afterwards).

I am very curious, but also somewhat fearful in regards to the Blood Angels' fate. It isn't just a Tyranid hive fleet knocking on Baal's door, there is also a Daemon horde led by Ka'Bandha coming at roughly the same time. That is going to be one hell of a battle. Now I don't honestly think GW would do away with the BA completely, but it could lead to some very big changes for them. Perhaps they finally reach the tipping point with the Red Thirst/Black Rage because of the situation.
