I was wondering if dark elves would ever use a alternate to a hydra such as a hijacked stegadon?

Gathering the Informations.

They probably have all kinds of crazy critters, but a Stegadon isn't really analogous to a Hydra.

Maybe something like a Carnosaur though.

I was just wondering because i really don't like metal models and want an alternate model that elves would use fluff wise so if anyone can think of an plastic model that fluff wise elves would use i would be very happy .

Finecast. Or do you hate that even more than metal, like most people?

Of course, you could always use some kind of Troll cluster.

Take a piece of cardboard and cut it out to match the base size of the existing Hydra.

Write "OVERPOWERED, HAHAHA" on it.

Im looking for actual advice not trolling i want a creature that dark elves would realistically capture tame and use so i can make an alternate hydra model because i dont like the original.

How about a rolled-up sock? Makes sense only flaming attacks could hurt it.

Just some kind of dark dragon could work, just go to Reaper Miniatures and search 'monster' there's about a million ideas there

Several non-GW manufacturers make Hydras, but not all are good sculpts.

Personally, I like the current GW and making it Finecast helps with this specific model.

I prefer this one by Rusted Heroes (50$):

... and this one by Reaper:

With some tolerance/fantasy, you can also use other medium sized dragons (e.g. Ice or oriental themed ones).

Realistically, anything is up for grabs. those Dark Elves can tame* just about anything.

*Tame meaning "torment it till it will roughly walk in the general direction you want it to go without turning around and eating you everytime you wack it"

As for it being a "counts as" hydra for gaming purposes, Manticores and Chimeras are going to be the best equivilant mythical beast because you need something that can realistically have a breath weapon, some sort of natural protection(scaly skin), and the possability for it to regenerate.

of course you could take something and say its been mutated by chaos and you can get away with it.

My problem is that i dont have enough friends who play the hobby to actually play it outside of a games workshop store so it has to be a converted gw model.

Then you will find a little trouble getting this to work as all the GW models they have are either Metal or Finecast.

One possability is the plastic trolls, except they come in packs of 3 for $44.50

of course you won't ever use more then 3 Hydras...would you

I was thinking stegadon with enslaved skinks, would that work? The main thing is that it does not have to be a hydra, it can be anything of a similar size that the elves have stolen.

Do you like the Chimera?

Too bad that it must be GW. Here another toy dragon by Papo:

Maybe that new manticore model would work?

I'd avoid anything with wings, personally.

Maybe take a look at Lord of the Rings. There's a metal Cave Drake that looks like it might fit the bill for you, aside for the metal part.

But like Grey Templar said: you're going to face an issue, as most of these bigger kits are in fact metal or Finecast or being made into Finecast from metal.

That reaper's hydra model looks pretty sweet. If you have a comic/gaming shop nearby, try hitting them up instead of GW. They might not have as great a selection of GW stuff, but they'll have reaper models probably. And they can usually order your stuff so you don't have to.

I'm sure no one would mind if you had a similar magic beast and called it a hydra, just had a different model for the look.

A Rhinox,some Salamanders, even a Daemon.

Just remember, this is what I always think off.
I once saw a model in WD,in the Battle report.
Vampire Counts Banshee=Empire handgunner painted light blue with a night goblin moon for a head. And yes this guy was one of the Heavy Metal guys.
