What ho chums!

Alright, I got the BT codex this weekend after a splendid weekend of gaming with a mate, we had some cool close games (he runs typical competitive Ork list, KFF, loads of BW/truks and boy mobs with PK nobs)

I play vanilla usually, but Ive been thinking we can have a few games with me using the BT codex, and ive sat down for a half hour trying to work out a good list (models aren't a problem, ive got loads) and they just... well.. strike me as being gakky!

The 100pt HQ has nothing on a vanilla libby, the troops aren't as good if you give them a decent load out (way more expensive than the nice 180pt CF/ML/FL tac) No LSS, No Sterguard, The LS with cyclone missle launcher cant use krak (only the large blast)

Basically, it looks to me that the highlights of the codex are the venerable dred with AC for 125, dakka preds, and maybe the termies with cyclone.

But they look kinda sucky.

So, two questions and bare in mind I am pretty noobish, and am ignorant of the BT.

1. Is the codex actually thought to be underpowered at the moment? I see very few mentions of the BT or army lists lately.

2. Any ideas for a decent 1500pt list for fighting the orks?

Don't focus too much on comparisons with current codexes -- it has some weaknesses in point cost and viable builds but makes up for it via 4ed min-max ability and wargear (with upgrades via FAQ to bring them inline with 5ed). You really have to dig a bit and fiddle around with lists to get at something good, but many think it is a sleeper dex post FAQ.

Strength of the list (off top of head)
--(nearly) Army wide preferred enemy via Emp Champ vow
--Ability to move in your opponents turn via Zeal
--2 heavy weapons in 5 man terminators
--5 units of terminators (3x elites, 2 retinues)
--Terminators with Furisous Assault or Tank Hunter
--Nasty and realtively cheap Marshal in terminator armor with Eternal Warrior, 3++ inv, and 4 attacks with chainfist
--70 point typhoon speeders
--Land Raider Crusaders as dedicated transports
--Can give machine spirit to any tank (psuedo fast vindicator, etc)
--Old drop pod rules, better then current ones as null deployment and late game objective grabs.
--Arguably ability to run a marine horde (there's some trickery you can do with that build and two holy relics with grimaldus -- +2 attacks for loads of marines with preferred enemy is potentially nasty)

Weakness
--Utterly crushed by IG with psycher battle squads (take morale check with 1 casualty, not 25%, drop leadership -- profit). This is mitigated depending on a rules interpretation of Rites of Battle.
--Expensive rhinos/razorbacks
--Little to no psychic defense.
--Lack of loads of things marines generally get for free now like:
*squad sgts, means most units lack armor ignoring attacks and the 9 leadership most marine units get.
*frag and krak grenades
*smoke launchers and searchlights

They're not the most competitive army out there or anything, but they're quite good. Trouble is, they have to be played shooty, which is counter-intuitive for a lot of players, as their fluff is heavily "rargh smash with sword!".

Tank Hunting Terminators with dual Cyclone Missile Launchers and 70-point Typhoons. Those're your advantage. You could also include the best Assault Terminators in the game, but the trouble with those is that they don't fit all that well into the gunline that the BTs should be played as these days.

Yeah those 70 point typhoons don't have the krak option though right? I was going to field a squadron of 3, because 70pts is good.

But I checked the BT codex, it gave only one type of fire, an its the str5 large blast. So, am I wrong here?

Check the latest FAQ for BT. A lot of the weapons found in their Codex was updated. You now have "normal" Typhoon, Cyclones, Storm Shields (woot!), etc.

Also, you should check out Laeroth's blog: http://www.implausiblenature.net/index.html

He has some nice article on how to play BT competitively.

Hope that helps!

Praise the emperor, bless your weapon and pass the ammo!
