Thought I'd post a few of my recently finished Orks... Let me know what you think... Some of the rust effects do look a bit bright in the pics, but it's not so garish in the flesh...

Great paint jobs. I like the Big Mek especially. Great skin tones, good job on the smock and the eyes.

For the vehicles they look very good, but a little bit too "Straight off the assembly-line". I'd maybe try to put some chips on the paint, some mud and dirt, etc?

But then again, there's nothing wrong with clean Orks if that's your army's style. Great job on the colors and the lenses too.

Thanks for all the positive comments. To be honest, I'm a bit hesitant about trying chips etc in case they just look like silver splodges, and I do like the clean look... For me a bit weathering powder dirties it up just enough...

For the highlights I followed a tutorial on the GW site.... It's the Warboss masterclass, but it's orkhide shade, then knarloc green, a green wash, then goblin green, a 4:1:1 mix of goblin green, golden yellow and bleached bone, then a 2:1:1 mix of the same. You can then do extreme highlights of bleached bone, but I didn't on these...

Here's the URL for the masterclasses - http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/articleCategory.jsp?communityArticleCatId=800032a&articleCatId=800032a&catId=§ion=whiteDwarf You have to be signed up for the website to view the articles though.

Solid work, overall. The trukk is especially striking. Admittedly, I do find the kans a tad bland, but everything you've decided to put on them has been added with a skillful touch, it seems. Discounting the rust looking like a blanket of pollen as a trick of the lighting, I'd have to say that if anything seems garish to my eye, it'd have to be the mek's skin. You've obviously put quite a bit of work into it (very smooth transitions between the layers - kudos for that!), but the contrast is just too much, for me.

It seems as if the brightest and darkest areas are the largest, with the intermediary gradient taking a back seat, leading to a phenomenon of ork painting I call "watermelon syndrome." It's a style some folks go for, so by all means keep at it if that's what you dig, but I think you'd get a far more natural effect by making your midtone more prominent.

[minor edit, because I apparently make grammatical errors when sleepy, then proofread as an afterthought]

Thanks for the comments oadie, they're much appreciated. I get what you mean about garish colours, they're not to everyone's taste, but I do like them quite bright. Not wanting to blame everything on the photos, but I think the colours have been quite saturated by the flash, so it does look brighter, an the contrasts between the light and dark areas have been exaggerated. I take your point about the mid tones, they do need work. I'm not used to using so many shades for highlighting my Orks' skin ones (mostly just 3 including base coat) so practice required there I agree. I like the watermelon comparison by the way!

A lot of people do rusty red, but I'm really loving the fire engine red. The bright colors really work well, I think.

I really like that trukk. The colors are all bright and clear but all work well together. Those Ork boyz stand out well and the green looks nice.

Keep up the good work. Wish I had such nice looking stuff
