So, I got an open box deal on an Air eraser from harbor freight for $5 today. I've never used an airbrush before, and i was wondering, what the difference is between the two, can i convert this somehow to an airbrush?

It's basically a spray gun

Actually its nothing like a spray gun...

To use an actual analogy - An Air Eraser is to a Sand Blaster what an Air Brush is to a Paint Sprayer.

An Air Eraser is basically a small easy to control sand blaster, its ment to spray sand, grit or a medium. It will not be an effective air brish.

Might be super useful for stripping metal minis though, with the right stuff in it.

I'm pretty sure that the harbor frieght is a needleless single action spray gun with a 0.5mm nozzle designed to shoot dry media. I wasn't trying to make an analogy I was describing it's function without being overly detailed. The width of the spray pattern is determined by the distance from the surface and air pressure remains constant. Designed by Charles Burdick who was also an influential air brush designer an air eraser can range from a simple spray gun to a full on double action managed airflow eraser. Theres nothing that would prevent you from using a wet media in an air eraser the question is normally why would you want to, which in this case is "it's free".

Could an air eraser be used for weathering effects? Can you load weathering pigments into it instead of sand?

Oh! What about going to town on a model with the air-eraser before primer - you could probably do some cool distressing effects for a SM chapter that has its home on a desert world or something where their tanks are getting blasted with sand all the time.
