So I am embarking on an ambitious project. For my Lizardmen army I want to make a dragon sized Quetzalcoatl statue, that looks as if it is being animated by my Slann. It is for Storm of Magic, to count as a dragon or young dragon. However I do not know how to best make the model look like a stone statue.

Any tips or tricks that you all can share with me would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows of sites that sell bits that might help out in my project, I would love to have a link. By bits, I mean anything that is vaguely mayan/aztec and any fake gems that are about the right size for dragon eyes, scales, etc. Thanks for the help guys.

There is textured spray paint available at Wal-Mart. Do NOT use the 'stone' effects, since they clog after one or two uses. Instead, try the 'natural' effects, which looks like stone on a miniature scale.

+1 for textured sprays. Aside from potential clogging issues, the stone effects sprays spit out little globs the size of tennis balls, in scale, but there are single-color texture sprays available with a much finer grain (not too rough, but they take a few rounds of drybrushing beautifully, which is exactly what you want, here).

For making the thing, I might actually try my hand at traditional subtractive sculpting using a block of laminated foam insulation boards as my base. Mesoamerican sculpture tends towards deep relief, possibly wrapped around a block (as opposed to the common conception of sculpture "in the round"), so sculpting this way shouldn't be as difficult as one might initially expect. Hop on Google image search and check out some reference pics.

For gems, head over to a dollar store - I'm sure you can find some dirt cheap toys or kid's jewelry that has a few gems you could pry off, if not loose plastic gems, themselves (plenty of girly craft kits floating around that might have something useful).

Textured sprays are great. I use them for my Tau buildings.

An alternative is to paint the finished statue with thinned PVA glue, and scatter fine grade sand on it.

In last edition of WD, Ogre Kingdoms. The new Ogre Steed has been depicted with horns that look so much like flint its a fantastic paintjob. Also a few months ago was the new Tomb Kings edition, and the Necrosphinx is brilliantly done in a blue-ish marble effect.

for whole stones i use those foam stressballs, then paint them black and 4 different shades of grey. if i can find my terrain where i did this, i will upload pics (think i may have donated those peices to a LGS)
