Having a Venom Blade would negate that, and then when his strength is doubled, he can re-roll to wound rolls against other people as well to make sure they die. Isn't that worth it for 5 extra points?
You're looking at this in a fascinating backward manner, let me explain deeper to help explain my position, and then maybe you can explain deeper if needed to help educate me about your position;
To my mind, the point of high strength in h2h combat is so that I can wound my opponent easily. I love the idea of wounding an opponent on 4+ or 3+ or even (joy) 2+
I like to pair that with a power weapon effect (Husk Blade, Djinn Blade, Power Weapon) so that I wound the enemy very easy *and* ignore armor saves.
I like to take the Venom Blade as a cheap upgrade that lets me wound on 2+ (joy) though I understand that since it allows armor saves it will always struggle to kill anything that is wearing decent armor (aka -
MEQ, aka over half the armies in the game)
So - the Venom Blade wounds on a 2+
Which means that with increased strength you get to re-roll...all the rolls of 1...which probably won't happen too much.
Quite frankly, versus almost everything you'll get that effect as soon as you get to
Str 4 with Furious Charge or something - because, you just need to match the opponent's toughness to get a re-roll, so versus Guard, some Nids, and Eldar you're already re-rolling.
But, still, it's only re-rolls of when you roll a 1, because everything else will already wound anyway.
So to my mind the question isn't - is it worth 5 to take a Venom Blade with a Soul Trap?
The question is - is it worth 10 to take a Soul Trap with a Venom Blade?
If you want to increase strength - take a weapon that will get better with increased strength.
If you want a Venom Blade, don't take a strength boost effect that will almost do nothing to make it cause more damage.
