Hello all, I'm returning to the game after a long hiatus (last time I played a real game was 3ed) and wanted some clarification on the Sternguard Special Ammo Rules

In the codex the ammunition types are listed as war-gear, ie it is a piece of equipment separate from their weapons like melta bombs or krak grenades.

The rules state that each "boltgun" armed model automatically comes with the different ammunition types.

What I'm confused on is how this rule applies to storm bolters, bolt pistols, and heavy bolters. Is "boltgun" synonymous with "bolter"?

If so, can those weapons fire the special ammunition by replacing their standard profile with that of the round being used?

Additionally, does a combi-"bolter" count as a "boltgun", and if so wouldn't that make "bolter" and "boltgun" synonymous as stated above?

I'm sure this has been addressed before, I just need a clarification before I begin to model up some Sternguard, as I don't want to waste time and bits if I can help it.

Thanks for your help and patience,

Instinctual

It is my understanding that this ammunition is only available to Bolters (Boltgun) and Combi-Bolters, other variations of the Bolt weapon type which exist in 3 other variations that I know of, that being the Bolt Pistol, Storm Bolter, and Heavy Bolter, do not receive the abilities to use these special issue ammunition. Do take not that the entry for each includes the Rapid Fire rule of Bolters and Combi-Bolters while the other 3 weapons do not have this rule.

It works on your standard bolter, and your combi- bolters

Only way I've ever seen it played, how RAW takes it, how I've played it in my battles...

Boltgun == Bolter
So stormbolters dont get the benefit of it, neither do bolt pistols etc.
