What is the best way to use liche purple on a model? Whenever I try it always looks gakky.

With a brush, typically. Finger painting is always tricky with a three dimensional canvas.

Haha.

Maybe I've should've been more specific.
I want to know what to use with it.
What highlight, what basecoat, what technique etc.

It all depends on what effect you are going for. Black basecoat will make it look quite dark and evil or w/e. White bascoat whill make the color pop.

As for highlights... the usual rules apply, it depends on what you are doing. Gem, metal, fabric, arc lightning....

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

Ok, thanks.
But how do I do something like scales or fabric?

scales have a bit of shine to them. Again, it depends on if you want bright or dark, but then edge them a brighter purple, and in a few places with a really bright purple.

Fabric..... yeeech.... I think I would basecoat it a dark purple, add the brighter purple on top of that, lightly drubrush it with the "brightest" purple chosen (or white-purple mix, whatever), and then wash it with some sort of other purple to darken it back down and hopefully matte it out.

Gathering the Informations.

Necron Abyss is a good basecoat for Liche Purple, and Hormagaunt Purple is a good way to add a 'matte' shade to the purple as well.

Ah, so that might be why. I tried putting the purple on just a black basecoat, and it becomes really dull and uninteresting looking. The Ink wash sounds like a good Idea too.

Purple.
The pinkish one is warlock.

Ahh I use it over grey highlight it with warlock and use a wash made from quadricone magenta, violet and black. It's really an in-between liche and warlock with black undertones.
If you check out my free candy thread my Eldar are purple, that may help.

Within the next few days CthuluIsSpy, I'll do a pair of color demos for you using some Dark Elf Assassins.

Are you trying for a deep, rich purple or a lighter, flat purple?

A rich purple. A bit like what they have on DE.

I generally use the Hormagaunt Purple foundation, followed by Liche Purple, then EITHER drybrush Warlock purple and use a Purple Ink wash, or do the wash first and then the drybrush. (I think doing the drybrushing/wash gives a very different look depending on which you do first. If the surface should be textured (hair, cloth) I do the drybrush second. If it should be smooth (latex, skin) I do the wash second.

Isn't hormagaunt purple a wash?

Surprisingly purple makes a great foundation for caucasian human skin. It is a subtle effect, but a purple base ends up coming off as much more realistic than a brown one.

I use black spray paint as a base, warlock purple as a second basecoat, and then Leviathan purple wash. I usually trim it with gold, but I'm not sure how well it will work for you. It works suprisingly well for a tyranid army, and even a necron one, but not sure about all the others...
