My application for university has been sent off and in september 2012 I'll be moving to one of the above, so do any locals have any advice on where to game there? FLGS's are preferable to GW shops.

Well I know in Dunfermline there's a great gaming place called D.W.A.R.F (PM me if you want details). If that's too far then I'm sure there's a place in Edinburgh called the SESWC which meets at the Royal Navy Club every Thursday at 7.

Wargames Emporium or Patriot Games are the FLGS in Sheffield. I believe Wargames has 40k on Sundays and Patriot has an evenings for Warmachine and another for anything that you fancy playing.
There are a few clubs around too. The GIMPS meet at the Park Gardeners Club (just outside the city centre) on Thursday evenings and there's also this new group http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/382377.page. It's about a 20 minute bus journey from the centre. I believe there is also a group that meets in one of the Sheffield Uni buildings but I don't know much about them.
In short there's a fair bit of choice here in Sheffield.

I'm in the process of sending off my Ucas form as well so depending on whether I decide to take a year off next year I may not be in sheffield. But I game at the Games Workshop on the Moor, but there are also a few clubs around Sheffield that I'm thinking about joining. I think I got the information from the website for Wargames Emporium, which is a really good independent stockist in Sheffield that specialise in miniature wargaming, etc.
Hope this helps.

Leeds has the Night Owls who meet on a Sunday and the Headingley Wargames club that meets on a Thursday.
