What's the difference? My understanding of Horror Punk is it's a sub-genre of Punk that focuses it's themes around horror films and other dark imagery but so does Death-rock so what's the difference?

And you'd be 100% right, AFAIK The Misfits were the first Horror Punk band ever ( circa 1978-79)..
@ MilkDog...The difference would pretty much be " Musical styles"...
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

You would be correct in saying so.

Do people just listen to a band and make up a genre for them... "Oh hey this band....they....they sound like punk.....punk from a horror movie.....these guys are definitely horror punk"

... I believe it's more or less the band creating the genre...since The Misfits described them self ( perhaps a tad tongue in cheek) as " Horror Punk"...way back in the late 70's.

Err my understanding was that Death Rock was a sub-genre of more Gothic leaning genre's, while Horror Punk was more punk. But then again, the line between goth and punk can be pretty blurry as it stands sometimes....
But meh....in general just screw genres and labels and all that jazz. It's stupid anyway. Just listen to what you like and be respectful of what you don't.

That's how I interpreted it, mind you I'm sort of a genre Nazi (or maybe I'm just a music snob ) when it comes to music but it does help being knowledgeable about different genres because say you're a
fan of Proto-Punk bands like Iggy Pop and The Stooges, well because you know what genre of music they play you can find other similar sounding bands that you might enjoy like Death (the 70's Proto-Punk
band not the 80's/90's Progressive Death Metal band ).

Yeah, apparently they do, because The Mars Volta has been classified as "Jazz Rock" or "Jam rock"
I also don't really apply a label other than the most generic "rock" "rap" "Classical", etc.
