Shas'Vre Sa'cea Devisk Y'kelu crept across the roof stop silently, pads on his hooves suppressing any noise they might normally make. His rail rifle felt heavy in his hands after hours upon hours of carrying it, but he knew it would be over soon. Devisk's thoughts often turned to why his superiors even made him bring it, considering he usually ended up using his Pulse Pistol instead, but he suppressed the complaint. After all, questioning the commands of one's superiors was the first step to forsaking the Greater Good. Finally he reached the apartment. It was a simple, white oval with a burst cannon auto turret and a small automatic door. A lone antenna protruded from the roof, sticking out like a sore thumb.

The turret and the antenna would complicate things. Sighing, the assassin hurled an EMP bomb. It made a peculiar ticking noise and detonated. There was brief flash and the electronics went out. Devisk's communications equipment, tracking device and rail rifle all went dead, rendered useless. Only the shielded electronics of the Pulse Pistol could endure the bomb. The building's burst cannon made a whirring noise and fell oddly limp, its barrel slumping to the floor. Devisk tensed his muscles and prepared for the jump; second to carrying the rail rifle, this was the worst part of his profession. Tau, with their stout limbs and poor depth perception, weren't made for agility; as a result, Devisk found jumping from roof to roof an extremely stressful activity. He suppressed the thought. Even the advanced A.I of the Tau could not be trusted to an assassination as complex as this and as a result an organic assassin like himself would have to do.

He hit the roof hard and lost his footing. Devisk tumbled backwards, clambering desperately for a hand hold. The smooth aesthetic of Tau architecture made such a task difficult, but luckily for Devisk he skidded directly past the antenna. Without a second thought he grabbed on, clinging for his life. He risked a look down to see the steep drop below. It was at least sixty foot, a descent even his advanced armor couldn't save him from. Devisk slowly stood up, making sure of his footing, and advanced towards the center of the roof. The vast majority of Tau buildings had a roof hatch that was electronically locked. The assassin was grateful that this building was not an exception. His EMP had successfully ruined any security measures installed, letting him simply pry it open and look inside. A thin, emancipated member of the Water Cast stood inside the dim room. He yelped and hurled a vase at Devisk, desperate for any way to hold the assassin off. It shattered harmlessly on his armor and the target ran off. Without hesitation Devisk leapt inside the hatch and gave chase.

Tau have poor vision and without electronic assistance they are essentially helpless in the dark. Devisk, with his sight enhancing helmet, could easily see but the target was not so lucky. After running for less than thirty seconds he tripped over a table and came crashing to the ground. Before he could stand back up Devisk was upon him. "Wait!" he howled. "What are you doing?"

The Shas'Vre wasn't used to questions like this. He supposed if his superior was here he would have a good answer, but Devisk himself didn't. He fired his pistol and missed. The target scurried over behind a large couch. Things like couches were a symbol of the diplomat's hedonism; it was clear why he had been chosen for assassination. "I'm here to kill you," answered Devisk.

"You won't get away with this! I have security cameras everywhere!"

Once again, Devisk wasn't used to questions like this. Normally he would've shot again and hopefully hit this time, but something inside him made him answer instead. "Any security cameras would've been disabled by the EMP, just like the lights, alarm system or turret. Even if the cameras were operational it wouldn't matter; my orders come from an Ethereal. I would be lauded for my actions, not punished."

"How?" stammered the target, clearly in disbelief. "I did everything they said! I served well! I was loyal!"

"You are violating the basic principles of the Tau with your rampant hedonism. While you lounge in your palace dedicated workers sleep on dirty cots in one room houses," the assassin said. "Equality in life standards and life itself is a basic tenant of the Greater Good."

"That isn't deserving of execution!" he cried out.

"No, it isn't," Devisk replied. "But the way you managed this hedonism was. You abused the system and the Greater Good. That is worthy of execution." He felt oddly articulate and proud of himself and his understanding of the Greater Good, but thinking about that brought Devisk back to one major order; he had to kill him without remorse or hesitation and he was clearly hesitating.

The target was struggling to hold back tears. "I did not abuse the Greater Good," he managed to say. "I never violated orders; I followed them as efficiently as possible. I excelled at my assigned job and enjoyed it. I did not abuse the Greater Good."

"People like you are holding us back from a true utopia," Devisk snarled. He fired, a plasma pulse disintegrating massive chunks of the couch. The target roared and jumped over the couch, charging at the assassin. Devisk aimed at the stampeding diplomat but missed and the diplomat tackled him. The two Tau fell to the floor wrestling for the pistol. It's glowing hot barrel scorched the diplomat's hands, but he didn't care, too consumed by rage. Devisk pulled the trigger and fired. Though the shot missed, the barrel was now glowing brightly. Scalding metal burnt the flesh from the target's hands. The assassin fired again and the gun overheated. Its barrel exploded, sending chunks of red hot metal into the diplomat's flesh. Roaring incoherently, the diplomat hit Devisk's helmet with a clumsy punch. His left optical unit broke and left the assassin half blind.

The diplomat grabbed the assassin by the throat and began to squeeze. Devisk felt the air cut off and began to gasp. He panicked, flailing wildly in a futile attempt to break free. What was left of his vision was going fuzzy. That was when the assassin remembered his combat knife. He grabbed it and slashed in every direction. The diplomat, his white robs now stained a dark red, went limp and slumped off of Devisk. Grunting, the assassin stood up and took a look at the corpse. He had cut across the diplomat's mouth, shredded one eye and ruined his scalp. "Good," hissed Devisk. He smiled proudly, knowing that he had slain another opponent of the Greater Good.
