I just put in an order thinking that GW had a distribution warehouse in Canada, and found much to my dismay that they are actually shipping to me from Memphis via the dreaded UPS.

Have any of my doughty Canuck comrades ever received freight from GW.com? If so, was it accompanied by UPS's exorbitant brokerage fees?

Please let me know so I might gird my loins appropriately.

Truthfully I'm not entirely sure why you would order from GW's site in the first place. Independent game stores generally offer 20% off (sometimes more if you get lucky) and you should be able to find one in that is based in Canada, so that you don't have to worry ab out international shipping and customs.

Specifically I use Phoenix Games Inc here in Fl.

GW's arrangement with UPS seems to cover the shipping charges entirely, I haven't paid any COD thus far. So if you do hit the $40 mark it is actually free shipping.

Incidentally, Canada/US border transparency is high enough that commercial freight from larger companies like this glides right through customs in general.

I've made a few orders on occasion, and if you place for then $40 it's free shipping. There is no problem with it, and if you're just looking for some of their bitz/conversion packs that they offer, it's much faster then getting you're FLGS to order them in for you. It takes about 5 business days to get the shipment to my place.

aye, i ordered 40+ so the shipping was free, but since neither of you guys have mentioned getting hit with duties and brokerage, it would seem i can rest easy.

I've actually never been hit with having to pay any import duties on any GW, or forgeworld stuff, so rest easy!

Back in the UK and hating it

I just recieved some replacement bits from GW via UPS, item was left at my door, which was not great, but no charges were levied which was great.

Last time I dealt with UPS here in Canada I had to fight to get them to check the warehouse for my second package despite turning up with two tickets left on the same day! (Oh plus drive to Richmond at my own expense and pay their usurious charges!)

You usually won't get hit with brokerage charges unless the package is quite expensive.

yeah, thankfully GW charges you HST at the checkout. there must be an exemption of some sort on duties below a certain dollar amount if the sales taxes don't have to be brokered.

If the tax is paid the broker won't need to pay it for you...

Yup, as mentioned, since you're paying online and you pay for taxes, there won't be any additional fees such as brokerage or duties. Also, I believe the trade agreement between the two countries exempts products manufactured in either country from being charged duty though I can be wrong about this.

Ive only had to pay extra on GW/FW stuff that came from the UK.

GW shut down their warehouse in Oakville a couple of years ago. I've had no issues getting stuff from Memphis though. Pretty seamless and as folks have pointed out, the HST is charged at the checkout which works well.

Yep, duty is charged on a list of particular items regardless of their country of manufacture, for example, jack daniels whiskey is dutiable coming into Canada. This is what leads me to believe there is an exemption under a certain amount if the taxes are already paid, since it's not worthwhile for the Canadian government to go after me for 85 cents in duty. I work for DHL, and have processed hundreds of brokerage invoices for customers, and one thing they all have in common is that the customer is paying a COD on both duty and G/HST. I'm going to check my waybill when the items come in and see what they're classified as.
