I'd like to have my IG take standard to battle, but I just like the look of one, but dislike the stats. If i model my power sword sgts with a standard, would this make it an ilegal model in an WYSIWYG environment?

If they have a standard instead of a power sword yes...

Not instead. Power sword is going on the left hand while the standard is right.

It could also help to locate the sgt's of the group, and it would be across the board. All sgts would be holding a standard and a power weapon, so it wouldn't be confusing.

I reckon in tournaments etc yes, but in friendly games I can't see it being an issue. Personally, I have a company standard model in every command squad I use because it looks cool and I spend a lot of effort making my own livery...A screaming beagle in carapace armour smoking a cigar believe it or not. No one has objected yet...although it does make them attract more fire!
