This came up in a game and we didn't know how to proceed so I want to ask dakka.

Let's say I roll a 6 and the closest unit to the dreadnought is an empty chimera. In my shooting phase, the chimera dies (the dreadnought fleeted first, of course). At the start of my assault phase, the closest unit to the dreadnought is now a squad of guardsmen that are within assault range.

The question is - do I charge the guardsman? Or does the dreadnought do nothing because his primary target was destroyed. If the closest target to the dread in fire frenzy somehow leaves LOS in the movement phase, it appears the common ruling is to shoot the next closest target. Does also apply to the rage?

I'd like this to *avoid* fire frenzy because I couldn't care less about it - I'm running a themed list and the dreadnoughts need to be in it for fluff reasons so this will actually be a frequent occurrence.

If you are able to assault that unit that was determined to be the nearest enemy in the movement phase, then you must assault this enemy.

If that is not possible you may assault any enemy that is within range, as per the rules in the BRB.

Yep, as DR pointed out -you MUST assault the enemy closest to you initially, however IF this enemy is no longer , or never was, a viable assault target (it is destroyed, another unit has assaulted first leaving you no ability to get into BtB and this "unable to assault", or they were already entirely surrounded at the start the turn, or they are behind impassable terrain and a move of >6" required to get to btb, etc) then you can assault ANY unit in range.

Thanks for the feedback, this is indeed how I thought it was - now I have a good justification for being able to assault.
