Pretty much the big rules in the tourney I'm going into is no psychers, no 2+ saves, and you have to take at least one troop choice.

I'm brand new to the game pretty much (played about two games so far) so I wanted some advise.

I was planning on taking a squad of grey hunters (10), a squad of ML longings, and maybe a lone wolf. Our point size is 400 and I was wondering if a thunder hammer/storm shield combo would be good on the lone wolf a this small of a scale.

That would mean hed get 3 saves right? Armor, feel no pain and invuln?

Let me know what you think.

I don't think he gets both the armor save and the invulnerable. You are like me probably, a whfb player, where they get all their save. But from what I understand they only get the best in this... but FNP isn't a save I don't think so you'll get it anyway.

The Lonewolf would only get FnP and either the armour save or the invulnerable save...

In 40k you will only get your best save. Feel No Pain, though it operates like one, is not a save. So you will get armor + FNP, invuln + FNP, or cover + FNP, depending on what weapon is being shot at you.

For smaller games of 40k, keep the following in mind. Heavy weapons are very difficult to make good use of. Any sort of enhanced mobility like jump infantry can be very valuable. And close combat is almost an inevitability. Thunderwolves are actually pretty good due to their mobility and durability, but no models exist, so.

One unbreakable shield against the coming darkness, One last blade forged in defiance of fate.

If i were you i would take 2 packs of 5 GH in razorbacks and then spend the rest on either some long fangs or a pair of Wolf Guard to lead the GH packs...

I thought you had to take a minimum of 3 since they're 3-10 wolf guard. Unfortunately I don't have any razorbacks yet, got 2 rhinos 2 10 man squads of grey hunters, another box not yet assembled of space wolves, 5 scouts, 10 ML LFs, and a rune priest. There's also a dred and termy squad from AoBR i have sitting around. I may look into the thunderwolf cavelry it shouldn't be too hard to paint some wolves up and put some guys on them, lol.

I just figured I could make one of the extra guys I have into a lone wolf, but I guess he's not worth the points?

Anyhow, here are the official rules, couldn't post it from my phone earlier but i'm in from work now

Combat Patrol Tournament 10/23

We will be hosting a Warhammer 40k Combat patrol style tournament on Sunday October 23rd. Sign ups begin at 1030 am with first dice at 1130. There will be a $10 entry fee with prizes for 1st, 2nd and best paint which will be voted on by you!

Rules:
• Armies will consist of 400 points or less, and must conform to the following Force Organization restrictions:
⇒ 0-1 HQ
⇒ 1-3 Troops (you MUST bring at least one Troop choice)
⇒ 0-1 Elite
⇒ 0-1 Fast Attack
⇒ 0-1 Heavy Support
⇒ 0-1 ‘Swing Slot’ (this maybe be used to field one additional Troops, Elite, Fast Attack OR Heavy Support choice)
• Armies are not required to take mandatory unit choices. All other unit restrictions (i.e. 0-1) apply.
• You may spend remaining points on units from anywhere in the Codex.
• With the exception of Troops and models with the Swarm Universal Special Rule, No model can have more than 2 Wounds.
• Psykers may be used, but may NOT use any power requiring a psychic test.
• No model may have a 2+ or a 2+ invulnerable save.
• No monstrous creatures.
• No Special/Unique/Named Characters are allowed in the Warhammer 40K Combat Patrol event.
• Aside from Troops choices and dedicated Transports, only vehicles with a maximum of 11 in any armor facing may be taken. Dedicated transports and troops may have a maximum armor facing of 12. Vehicle Squadrons and Artillery units at permitted provided every unit within the unit individually would be permitted.
• Forge World/Imperial Armor units are NOT allowed in the Warhammer 40K Combat Patrol event, however players may still use their Forge World models to represent a unit from their codex.

so far I've seen one for and one against LFs. I would imagine they wouldn't do too bad if I could stick them in a corner of the board away from most enemies and just shoot across the board.

Problem is, 2 full squads of GH takes 300 points...

I was in a combat patrol league on time, ( it was an escalation league first month was 500 pts with combat patrol rules)

The meanest list ( aside from mine as ours didnt require an HQ for some blasted reason) was

3 units of 5 GH in Las/plas razor backs and a unit of longfangs

I would take a cheap HQ, then 2 razor backs then long fangs.

WGBL seems like a good idea...
Can you proxy the Razorbacks with Rhinos?

Because "Combat Patrol" has HQ as a 0-1 choice and limits armour saves and amount of wounds on ANY model, so many of the normal HQ options can't be taken.
By the rules of CP, Eldar forces cannot take ANY HQ choices (as they are all over the W limit) for example. In CP this is fine as you are NOT required to take a HQ unit. The 0-1 means your minimum number of HQ choices is ZERO (unlike normal games using the usual FOC where HQ is 1-2).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
