Hey All, I play CSM and its not a very swarmy army. Although I greenstuff and enjoy moding and painting its never quite the swarm unless i try and go all Undivided w/ Lesser demons! (which doesnt seem to work out well). My buddy is orkz so i was going to pick Tyranids.

I own army builder and quickly ran up a list that I'd enjoy but I think theres a lot of things i would like to do.. just all the MC's are quite expensive so it will take some time ($80 for a Hive Tyrant seems a bit steep.. ).

Heres the list!

Hive Tyrant

x2 10 man Genestealer Broods

x2 20 man hormagaunt broods

x9 Ripper Swarm Broods

x3 Ravener Brood

x3 Biovore Brood.

That being said I saw a lot of potential with Venthropes , Toxic Miasma's and the OP Doom of Malan'tai. I really love Carnifexs but i know I wont be able to afford a few of them until the next couple of paycheques. I figure nids are kinda like orkz where you need a good number of them to do well. I idealized poisen sacs, and being quite melee oriented. Termagaunts seemed alright but ill be honest in saying i dont like the look of the models, but i know that has little variant on how good they are.

Anyone have any insight? is there a new codex around the bend thats going to change everything? are nids bad? I saw necrons and was turned off by the price, the lack of variety, and the lack of customization. Nids seem to be very opposite.

Well first off Tyranids are very localised you can only have some things If you want to win.

Tervigons, Genestealers and Hive Guard. Very boring but powerful. And trust me painting a Horde of Models could put you off doing it.

I have roughly 100 models with my CSM so painting isn't that bad to me.. I work in the creative field and the idea of making customized creatures or vehicles sounds like a blast to me. I think I'm up to 30 CSM, 20 Plague Marines, 20 Khorne Berzerkers, 20 Lesser Demons, 7 Terminators, 2 Terminator Lords, 2 Demon Princes, 4 Rhinos, Landraider, 2 Obliterators, Nurgle Lord, 2 Dreadnaughts, Defiler, 9 Slaanesh Noise Marines (converted Undivided) and 14 Finecast Plague Marines. 3 Vanilla SM (7 more to paint). I was going to go SM but i realized after a bunch of matches vs some SM's that their justn ot my play style.. I like being very melee oriented and Orkz, Nids, CSM.. appeal to me very much.

Another one was Dark Eldar but .. i dont think so.

It sounds like Blood Angels or GK. If your drawn to MEQ's stick with them, you'll just get annoyed when you can't have saves. Trust me.

Well thats the thing, I don't think I want another MEQ. The others just all sounds like variants and i like CSM the most out of all the MEQs. I dont mind not getting armor saves when theres more of them coming over the hill.. not to mention Monstrous Creatures galore!

Then they get slain by Force Weapons. Tyranids are a tough gig. They've got to be used by a tacticaly astute general.

Anyway I would suggest you just search the Tactica forum for a Article and read that before you commit yourself.

Aye thats why I posted here.. to get some insight. I know Tyranids will be a costly army as MC's make up the majority of units I consider "fun"! Force weapons yes.. but theres not many force weapons in the group of friends i play with. I play with an Ork buddy a lot, and a SM, Necrons.. and instant death is the bane of most units anyways.

As long as you and your buddies aren't playing super hard competitive lists or heavy mechanised lists, you should have a lot of fun with Tyranids. It sounds like you've already made up your mind and want Tyranids - go with it!

Nah we're not super competitive, its all about having fun. I'm going to be doing some extensive research but so far I really like genestealers, and ripper swarms! ahahah!

In that case, all the more reason you should just go Tyranids, and have fun with it. Go for it bud

Lictors and Deathleapers.. they look like so mcuh fun!

I think this is also a good excuse for me to buy an airbrush and try one of those out.. I've done a lot of digital painting and sculpture over the last few years (college/job). I'd love to get my hands on an airbrush but I never felt like I needed it with CSM because of all the details of grenades, belts, tiny skulls, etc.

Tyranids look like perfect candidates for airbrushing and I think it will releive the pressure of painting so many models.

I also am looking to plan a lot of this army out before I purchase it (unlike my CSM which was my first army ever).

I saw some Army Painter primer colors and when I decide on a color scheme I want to paint coat them in a primer color so I'm not basing them white and then repainting them back to the color I want them. Less layers of paint the better!

Anyone seen some neat color schemes? I like greens and browns a lot, I saw some reds/blacks that were cool but the skeletal marrow color and the greenish worn color seem to be my favorite. But my CSM army is mostly green as I love nurgle.. so maybe I don't want them to look too similar to each other. I've seen dipping methods with woodstainer and spinning them on a frother! I plan on greenstuffing these guys a lot as well.. assembling most of the army and waiting until I know what color I want them all to be.

Also looking at sites to get my nids for the lowest possible, I wish i could buy it local but when a box of Genestealers is $40 and its $20 from a UK store... why would I ever buy anything local? Truth be known 90% of my CSM army is all from the UK because I wouldn't of been able to afford the gouging Canadian prices =\

Nurgle's Garden of Decay

Wayland Games do really cheap warhammer 40k models including a load of tyranids.

Hive Fleet Hydra 5000

In the end everything is devoured, its only a matter of time...

Doom of OP is ok but will die stupid easy to melta. or anything ID vs MEQ.

Yeah tyrants are expensive. Wish you would have caught me before i sold all of my nid stuff.

Horm's. go with toxin sacs and ad glands. when you're str 4 on charge you then get to reroll your wounds vs MEQ's because poison = toughness = reroll wounds.

get some hive guard in there. str 8 no LOS will kill transports pretty good. termagaunts and some tervigons will make a horde army squeel. you poop 3D6 termagaunts every turn and can give units FNP.

I think I'll be buying 2 battle forces.. that gives me 32 gaunts, 32 termagaunts,16 genesteelers, 6 warriors, some ripper swarms... then i fill in the blanks w/ MCs....

2 carnifexs, 2 venomthropes.. maybe some more genestealers, a hive tyrant.. some myceptic spores..

Question!!! Venomthrope sounds like a real asset! its like the tyranid form of a KFF, can anyone attest to how good this is? as KFF's are hidden in 20-30 man boy squads.. and this fellow seems to be all by his lonesome.. being an infantry unit tho he'd get a 4+ for being behind a comrad.. what say you ?

Don't use rippers they really army worth it most armies have the firepower to kill them rightout through blasts or sheer volume in the old codex I used them but now I don't touch them

Oh? well.. rippers come with battleforces so at least I'll have some neat looking critters... if they come individually maybe i'll have them crawling out of open sores of my carnifexes.

I've seen some interesting color schemes.. and nids with parasites living in crevis's of their bodies... reminds me of nurgle.
