The title pretty much says it all, I was just wondering because of the Lobba for Big gunz... it says it's range is "G48"...I'm stumped, I looked through the rulebook but couldn't find anything...

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I believe it is you roll 3 dice and you take the 3 dice's combined score. You then get to fire that range. You cannot shoot farther than your current maximum range.
This is not correct for 5th edition.

"G" weapons are simply "Barrage" weapons now.
In editions past, it was a requirement to guess and verbalise the firing range before placing the marker and checking stuff.
Now, you still "guess" but you don't have to say it aloud.
(by guess I mean you still place the template where you think it will be inside the range - or outside minimum range - before checking the range with a tape. A non-verbalised guess is still a guess.)

"G" weapons are simply "Barrage" weapons now.
Actually they've always been barrage weapons, at least as far back as third edition. The guessing was a mechanic of how they worked.

I miss the days when being a good judge of distance made your army OP. Also they allowed you to fire into combat by "guessing" badly...

I don't have my third edition main book on hand but I believe Barrage had more something to do with multiple template(blast) weapons in a unit.
I too miss the need to be a good judge of range, the contests my friends and I had with that were grand fun.

Yes, they chose a pointless barrier to entry that mattered not a jot once you'd played a few games.
