Long story short I used to play Space Wolves & Dark Eldar (since 2nd ed.) but sold my armies when I moved over seas (only so much I could afford to ship over). Years later I get back into 40k and I'm now starting my Space Wolves army after completing a Tau army.

My first Space Wolves army was quite standard and well balanced. It was also extremely large as I kept collecting models and equipping them for any situation allowing me to be versatile. This time around I want to start by doing a themed army. After reading the codex I've decided on Harald Deathwolf's company. Now according to the codex he loves and employs all things furry and four legged of a wolfish nature. So how to build my army up to represent that? Here are my thoughts on the problem and I would love to read what all of you have to say as well.

Note this is not an army list, but a break down of the core units I think Harald Deathwolf's Company would use. I have no problem collecting three versions of the same model if need be and these will be represented as well.

For an army to keep up with what is mostly cavalry units then Drop Pods, Rhinos, Razorbacks will be assigned in that preferred order. I've also listed the units in preferred order with the most likely choice at the top.

HQ

Canis Wolfborn (for the ability to take Fenrisian Wolves as troops)
Wolf Guard Battle Leader with Thunderwolf
Rune Priest w/ Bike/Jump Pack/Terminator
Wolf Priest w/ Bike/Jump Pack/Terminator

Elite

Iron Priest w/ Thunderwolf and 4 Cyberwolves
Wolf Guard Pack
  • 5 in terminator armor
  • 1 w/ bike
  • 1 w/ Jump Pack
  • 3 in power armor

  • Wolf Scouts
    Dreadnoughts

    Troops

Grey Hunters w/ Transport + wolf guard
Blood Claws w/ Transport or as a full squad of 15 + Wolf Guard and possibly Lukas the Trickster
    Fenrisian Wolves

    Fast Attack

Thunderwof Cavalry - collect at least 2 units (already ordered 1 squad of 5)
Swiftclaw biker pack - 9 bikes, 1 attack bike 1 Wolf Guard
Skyclaw Assault Pack - 10 skyclaws. 1 Wolf Guard

    Heavy Support

Long Fangs - 2 squads. 1 drop pod & Wolf Guard, 1 Razorback
    Land Raider
    Land Raider Crusader

Fluff & for Friendly games only

This was proposed by Fenris Kid over at The Bolter and Chainsword

    Harald Deathwolf
    WS: 6 BS:5 S: 5 T: 5 W: 4 I: 5 A: 5 Ld: 10 Sv: 2+/3++

    Harald Deathwolf (HQ)..........270pts

    Unit Type: Infantry

    Wargear
    Runic Armour
    Icetooth (Thunderwolf)
    Frost Axe
    Storm Shield
    Saga of the Beastslayer
    Wolftooth Necklace
    1 Fenrisian Wolf

    Acute Senses
    Independent Character
    Counter Attack
And they shall know no fear
    Thunderwolf King

Thunderwolf King: Harald's great company goes to war accompanied by a host of lupine beasts, be it flesh and blood, cybernetic construct or even spirits of loyal companions. To show this in an army that includes Harald can include one Thunderwolf Cavalry squad as a troops choice.

Possibly but it seems like it works.

So how do I propose to play them? Well I plan on a swift attack army using Thunderwolves, Bikes, Jump Packs, and Drop Pods to close in and assault the enemy in force while using Grey Hunters and Long Fangs as support. Terminators would be outfitted as needed with either assault or support (or combination of the two). The bikes and Fenrisian Wolves would be used to screen the Thunderwolves allowing them to reach assault.

Well that is all I have for the moment. I really want to try something different (for me that is). After playing Tau for the last three years, and mostly against Chaos, I'm really tired of not being able to assault or survive assault. I want to tear into my opponents and leave their scattered corpses for the crows to feed on.

    Ummm...somewhere...

Well I would be more inclined to use fenrisian wolves for screening the thunderwolves rather then bikes and whatnot, the bikes and jump troops of the wolves tend to be quite a lot more expensive for what they do, I would think having a lord on Thunderwolf to go with one squad, followed by drop pod support Also from when I have used him, the iron priest is quite awesome at times Take the rune priest with runic armour instead, your not gonna get a chance to fire off the storm bolter because you will probably be shooting living lightning

~Pre-heresy Luna Wolves- WIP! (Probably gonna be a while)
~Recently sold sisters, GW ruined them for me their burning of xeno's will be remembered! (Friend bought them back for me, making them work, statement so far half stands after a lesson learnt)
~ SKAVEN - 1000 points and growing, just have assassinate a few warlords to get my way...need more cheese...

Well I've assembled my Thunderwolf Cavalry.

1 Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield
2 Bolt Pistol & CCW (Chain Swords)
1 Bolt Pistol & Plasma Pistol
1 Bolt Pistol & CCW (Axe)

I need to spend this weekend to greenstuff all the bubbles and missing sections However they are still really nice models and I plan on getting a few more in the future. I'm also waiting for my Iron Jump Packs from MaxiMini.eu. I've ordered 5 of them to go with the 5 GW Jump Packs I have. I've also Magnetised them so I can switch my Sky Claws to Blood Claws.

I have my Sky Claws built! 5 with GW Jump Packs and 5 with MaxMini Jump Packs. I've magnetised all of them allowing me to switch between Packs so they can be Sky or Blood Claws.

I played a 750 pt battle with them last night. Annihilation game vs. Eldar. I won 5 to 3 and we ran over to a sixth turn. This was a basic army so I could relearn how to play Space Wolves (it's been 7 years since I've played them).

Things I learned from my first battle

I found out that a squad of 15 Blood Claws with just the standard CCW and BP is an awesome wave of death and destruction.
I learned that my son has finally learned to use Dire Avengers as they took out my Battle Leader and a 5 man squad of Grey Hunters w/ Wolf Guard.
I learned that when you have 60 attacks with Blood Claws you can still get 10 wounds with a WS of 3.
I learned that 2 Lascannons and 2 Missile Launchers is enough to take out the transport and to get rid of pesky Fire Dragons biggrin.gif
I learned that a 7 man Jetbike squad including Autarch is an even match for a 6 man Grey Hunter Squad including Wolf Guard.

This was a fun game and so much different than how I've had to learn to play Tau. Although I miss my Strength 5 weapons and Plasma Rifles there is nothing like being able to assault again!

Finding pictures or anything for Harald Deathwolf is rough! So I made this in Adobe Illustrator.

Have you got a P&M blog?
It might be a good idea to make one if you want to post pictures of your army as you go...
At any rate this looks fairly awesome.
    Good luck.

Unfortunately GW didn't have the Thunderwolf models out and I was getting impatient to play with them so I purchased them through a different company. But no worries I plan on getting another squad of 5 Thunderwolves through GW and use the extra as an Iron Priest.

Purplefood, what is a P&M blog? I'm not up with half of the abbreviations people use these days.
