To turn your master into its Avatar form, you pay 2ss when hiring the crew to give you the option to do so.
All the Avatars have 2 requirements which can be met in order to manifest the Avatar form. For example 1 of Pandoras requirement is to cause 10 wounds (in total) with her Self Loathing spell. One of Perditas is use Executioner 3 times.
Depending on the turn, and the number of requirements met your master can turn into an Avatar. If you want to delay the transformation, you must discard a soulstone. The AP cost of the manifestation also varies, again depending on the turn & no. of requirements met. Early in the game it is likely to cost All your AP to transform, while later in the game it could be free!
When you do transform, your totem disappears, you can discard a ss to make a healing flip (for a free action) and then your off!

Yep, every master has an avatar. Most of them aren't very good, but a few masters will take their avatar in every game (Ramos, I'm looking at you)
Overall I find the mechanic a little clunky and wont bother with it, I'd of preferred if they just added new masters, but it seems that Wyrd is shying away from that idea

+1 to what he said, its a very limited mechanic and in my opionon doesn't add much to the playability side of the game.

after a dozen games with avatar zoraida i think they are interesting but not neccesary. some are pretty niche (lilith) while others are just cool for the look and potential (seamus). i like avatar zoriada, but not fully.

Som'er is almost mandatory to Avatar; and doable for turn 2. You can easily spend turn 1 recklessing gremlins to let Som'er reckless and heal them all; then turn 2 use the all action to transform (preferably with Ophelia Ooh it's a girl!ing him over) and then HOG WHISPERER to reactivate him =D
