So I found these great cobblestone looking mats at my nearby Micheal's: .

The ones I found were 18" by 36" so thought great, I'll buy 2 and have an awesome base for a Malifaux board! Bought a piece of wood and had Lowe's cut it to 3 x 3 and then glued the mat to the wood. First problem arises: turns out it is really only 35.5" so I'll have to shave off 1/2". No big deal and no one will really notice it being 1/4" shorter on two sides.

I spend about an hour filling in the seam between the two pieces with green stuff and then decide it's ready for paint. And that's where the big problem comes in. I sprayed it black and let it sit for an hour. It was still a bit sticky so I let it sit overnight. Next morning, still sticky...

Decided to spray it with a different undercoat, an automobile primer. Still sticky. I mixed up a batch of acrylic craft paint, wood glue, and water and painted the whole table and let it dry overnight. Still sticky but a bit better. Finally I just decide to cover the whole damn table with latex paint, the same that I use on my other gaming tables. Seems to be a success... until I picked it up and the edges just slid off revealing the sticky interior.

At this point I am out of ideas and so I turn to Dakka for help. Why is it still sticky? What kind of paint can I use? Help me Dakka Dakka, you're my only hope!

Use Duplicolor vinyl die and adhesion promoter instead of just primer. It is designed specifically for that purpose.

Thanks! Can that be found at a hardware store, craft store...?

Spray over it with sealer may work

That duplicolor vinyl paint and adhesion promoter can be found at any chain auto parts store. The vinyl paint is intended for automotive interiors and the adhesion promoter is designed for bumpers, mirrors and other types of plastic trim.

Thanks for the help. Just scraped all the latex paint off the board (and gave myself three blisters on my fingers in the process...) and now I'll try using that vinyl paint, there is an auto parts store just a few minutes from my house.

If this doesn't work, the whole thing is going in the trash. The cobblestone mats were supposed to be a shortcut and now I've spent hours on this damn board. :(

Picked up the vinyl spray and it worked!! I'll finish up the board and then show it off with my Malifaux crews.

Glad to hear the die worked. I have been using the stuff on projects for years and love it. Also works as a great sealer for resin. I have had a few pieces where primer would not stick even after scrubbing the pieces with degreaser and dish soap. It sticks and goes on really thin with no buildup even in heavy coats.

Please post up pics of your finished board, I'd love to see the results. I've used the brick pattern vinyl matte for quick re-basing of vinyl clix figures many times as vinyl figures and matts seem to superglue together really well.

The only finishe on it is Minwax polyshades Antique Walnut and matte spray but there doesn't seem to be any stikyness.

Sounds like the vinyl spray worked well, but one other product to consider is Gesso. I've used it on lots of vinyl figures and it seems to adhere and has a bit of flex to it as well. Of course I've never used it on something as large and "requiring-sturdyness" as a terrain board.

I'll take some pics and post them up! The spray was pretty cool, it was dry almost as soon as it hit the board, neat stuff for sure!
