Was just curious, been lurking the forum, seems almost everyone here who plays Warmahordes either plays 40k as well, or got fed up with 40k and came here. Was wondering who wasn't 40k first.

I never played Warhammer. I played RPGs and TCGs and got into the game due to playing on aspects of those, and at the time, cheaper costs to buy my entire Faction and then just kind of buy stuff as they came out.

And stuff.

I got in to WM at the beginning, eventually got fed up with 40k, and am now swinging away from WM (don't like their lack of artistic integrity (IMHO, of course)), to malifaux (more integrity and style) and back to 40k (better minis for a better price)

DakkaDakka is a primarily 40k and GW focused board.
It should not be unusual that most of us have come to Warmachine from 40k.

Those who didn't, are more likely to find the PP forums, and stay there.

I started wargaming with 40k. It took awhile for other companies to impress me enough to get me to try their stuff.
I had the B&W Prime book and 2 Battleboxes, but never played the game until the summer before MkII came out.

I switched from GW to PP because, in my experience, the players are more gracious.

I started a few months after MkII released, as everyone at my LGS suddenly was playing in one of the Leagues...after a few demo games I was hooked.

I started with 40k and Fantasy, and still play them on occasion, but warmachine is just a quicker game, and with my schedule quicker games are all I have time for right now.

Heroquest
Advanced Heroquest
Fantasy battle
Necromunda
40k
Break of a few years
Warmachine

First miniatures game I played was Chainmail (precurser to the D&D miniatures game). I think I had a full warband for ~$40 US. At the time a decent 40k or WHFB army would have cost $200+.

I got started with WM when it came out at GenCon... that would've been '03 I think. My first starter box (Menoth) came in a black & white Privateer Press box with shredded paper as packing material. Khador and Cryx hadn't been announced yet.

I didn't start 40k until I had more disposable income and could afford to drop $1-200 on a secondhand army.

Well there is no doubt on that, it's just seemed that on any of the various forums I've been to, most people seem to be those who were fed up with 40k prices and lack of tactics, often saying 40k is checkers, W/H is chess.

PP's core target demographic is the 25-45 male crowd.

40k's core target demographic is the 14-20something.

It makes a big difference.

technically i started with 40k. i was looking at building a CSM army. started buying with a Chaos lord. never went further, found Warmahordes. year later when mk2 was being play tested i started again and this time i got serious. its been almost a year since i started with a battle box and full WGI + UA. i now have 4 casters, ~75pts in models and mor eon the way. wanna know who my Small based solo proxy is? you guessed it, my Chaos Lord =]

I could not have started with 40k - when I began miniatures wargaming, it wasn't even out yet. I don't even recall the route I took to get to WM/H, but it included the following (at least):

WFB (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th - at least)
40k (RT, 2nd, 3rd, current - at least)
Battledroids/Battletech
Car Wars
Chronopia (1st, 2nd)
Warzone (1st, 2nd)
Flames of War
Mighty Empires
Space Hulk (1st ed)
Warmaster
Battlefleet Gothic
Silent Death
Star Trek Tactical Simulator
MK
Heroclix
MWDA
Tactica & Tactica Medieval
Man O' War
Uncharted Seas
Battlemasters
Clan War
Necromunda
Mordheim
Warlord
CAV
Legions of Steel/Planetstorm

And I am not even going to get into RPGs. (The list above does not include one-offs at cons, or games where I have the rules and armies, but have not played a game. It would be much longer if I included either of those.)

But, there is another reason (aside from Dakka Dakka being a GW-themed board) as to why so many WM/H players have a40k background. Just as almost every role-player has at least a nodding familiarity and experience with D&D, so to do many miniature wargamers (of the non-historical variety) have at least some familiarity with WFB or 40k - you have to hunt far and wide for a group that plays Chronopia, but finding a local WFB group is generally fairly easy. Likewise, finding someone who still plays Legions of Steel is hard - but 40k is just down the street.

Like it or not, for the time being, GW is still the default state of non-historical miniatures wargaming.

My official faction choice is "All of the above"

A friend introduced me to miniature wargaming with Warmachine. I played Menoth for about two years until right before mark II was released. The Dawn of War games peeked my interest in 40k and as I read more of the lore I decided to sell off my WM stuff and go with 40k instead. Both are fun games but the story, modeling, and overall feel of 40k wins the day for me.

Also, the first minis I saw as a kid were an old Ork army at a local game store. I think I knew then that I wanted to play Orks at some point so my foray into 40k was long overdue anyway.

I started with Mageknight and after they went belly up, I started my Warmachine Menoth Army. 4 years later, I tried 40K because I got tired of the heavy metal. Now with the plastic Warmachine figures, I am returning with Khador.

I guess I technically "started" with either Fantasy or Necromunda, but I
didn't play a game until 40k.
