Hey Everyone,
I had some ideas for a custom chapter, and I haven't been able to find any sort of fluff at Lexicanum, or 40Kwiki about a specific topic. So I thought I would ask you guys.
Are there any Space Marine chapters that primarily seek out and use ancient technology? I know of the Iron Hands, of course, but they do not seem to specialize in seeking it out. They seem to just prefer machinery over flesh (that's a very broad generalization of course).
To make myself less vague, I am looking for a known chapter similar to what the Relictors do...but not involving Chaos artifacts.

Any chapter with a strong mechanicus background tends to seek out archeotech. Other chapters are not opposed to using archeotech if they find it, but most don't seek it out unless it's stuff related to their primarch, such as some items for the salamanders.

I to was wondering about this for my Chapter. One of my hooks I was thinking about for my chapter was scanvenging (not the SM company but serfs). The Adder company would be first to explore and validate any recoverable war material from present to past battles. Explore space hulks for war materials and equipment and put them in the pipeline for issue. Are chaos rhino's recoverable or are they to corrupt is another example. Another hook was recycling. Like Ork equipment thats melt down to make other useful products IE mine casing, concentina wire's etc etc. Granted if I find power armor/bolters that belongs to another chapter I turn them over....but not the ammo. Just a few ideas I was thinking

I haven't heard of any chapters themed specifically around seeking archaeotech but as stated above any chapter close to the Mechanicus might be likely to spend time doing so. And any chapter that spends a lot of time and resources seeking archaeotech would probably gain a good relationship with the Mechanicus, as long as they shared. Although, come to think of it, a Chapter that went after Archaeotech but saw only themselves as fit to keep it cauusing strained relations with the priests of Mars might be an interesting idea.

No issue on sharing with the Mechanicus....but on my planet/fortress/fleet I have it located. Not sure yet on how I want to base my Chapter. Willing to share with others

The Mentors are known for trying new, experimental technology. Perhaps this could also include seeking out archaeotech with the Ad Mech, as this is 'lost' technology.

I don't see any reason to not too. Those that make an effort to recover say "lost tech" is gaining favor with the mechanicus, recovering artifacts is another bonus to, battlefield clean up. Eventually one could equip, supply and maintain a good size security force of serfs. With support vehicles. Build favor with other chapters for locating property that belongs to them and maybe just maybe...find a STC template for something.

The Salamanders have a group dedicated to finding archaeotech relating to their history. Specifically, the 9 artefacts left behind by Vulkan.

Exactly! I just think it would be cool to create a chapter which seeks out things like space hulks and scavenges them. Glad to see that other people had this idea as well. The tough thing I am trying to decide is whether or not to have them on the same side as the Mechanicus. As much I enjoy most of the AdMec's views on knowledge and technology, I think it would be much more dramatic to make the chapter an irritant to them. The chapter could have a slightly different viewpoint in that any technology found must be put to the use of the Imperium (or simply their chapter if it was Marine specific), instead of sequestered away on a forge world to be studied for centuries, or simply used for political gains.
I think that most tainted items CAN be purified, I think it just depends on how corrupted it is.
On the real world side, it makes for plenty of cool ideas for customizing models. The only thing I have had a difficult time with is trying to find a cool enough name for the chapter.

That's not a bad idea. Maybe they have a "special" squad or whatnot that spends more time on the hunt for this stuff? Not sure if that would fit in the fluff of The Mentors or not, but if there isn't much on them it would be easy to add.

The Ordo Xenos would use alien technology against the aliens.
So, a deathwatch captain or sergeant with a Xenos gun might look bitchin'.
