So this is my first attempt at a general all comers Lizardman army list, I like the idea of having slaan with temple guard (slaan would have life or light) and I like lotsa saurus and skinks so here goes, let me know what you guys think and if the list is doomed to failure?
Slaan, BSB, warbanner, cup of oldones, 3 disciplines=470 (life or light, not sure yet)
Skink Priest: lvl 2, scroll=125
Skink Priest: lvl2, cube=140
Saurus: 20 strong, musician/standard=238
Saurus: 20 strong, musician/standard=238
Skinks: 24 strong, musician/standard, 3 Krox=299
Skink Skirmishers: 10 strong=70
Skink Skirmishers: 10 strong=70
Chameleon Skinks: 5 strong=60
Chameleon Skinks: 5 strong=60
Chameleon Skinks: 5 strong=60
Temple Guard: 19 strong, Musician/Standard, Razor standard=370
Salananders: 2 salamanders=150
Salananders: 2 salamanders=150
2500 total.
I guess I imagine I'd have temple guard in middle with skinks next to them for counter charge/flanking and saurus blocks next to them then skirmishers/salamanders/chameleions harass and redirect charges? Do you guys think that the skink units/chameleons are going to work the way they are configured? Are the Saurus/temple guard blocks optimal? I like the heavens spells that force 6s to be re-rolled and -1 to hit in CC and shooting so hopefully those add to survivability of the army in CC and I was thinking light to make things WS/I 10 in CC and +1 attack ASF along with a further -1 from phas protection, so light seems really good IMO but life also seems like a strong choice.

Change the Warbanner to banner of disipline
Skink Priest dont really need to be Lv.2, the Slaan will do most of the spell casting.
Add 4 Saurus to each block, they work best 6 per rank.
Champion are worth taking for damage mitigation against uber killy characters with challenge.
As for lore, either one is good really, try both out and see which one you like.

Does banner of discipline prevent the rest of the army from using the slaan's LD? Also, if I make the Saurus units 24 strong, should I give them spears?
How good are a skink/krox unit? Should I just take 6 krox? Are 2X2 salamanders really worth it?

No, the banner of discipline prevents his own unit from using the general's inspiring presence, which doesnt matter because the Slaan is in the unit and they use his leadership anyway.
Salamanders are definitely worth it.
Spears is more of a personal taste thing.
Skrox is fine IMO, some people might think otherwise.

What Jackster said about the standard is totally true and great, LD10, stubborn cold blooded means they're not going to run any time soon.
Also, I'm not a fan of kroxigors in with skinks, even though it protects them from attacks, you're probably not going to deny steadfast from anyone and even worse, they could do a lot of wounds back to you since they're hitting against your low WS and T2.
I also prefer salamanders in units of 1 to prevent running from panic. They may be cold blooded, but they still have poor LD.
If you cut them down to units of 1 and maybe remove your ranked skinks, you could fit in a stegadon or stegadon ancient which can add some hard hitting power to the list. The ancient in particular can be annoying with it's 4D6 shots per turn.

Definitely go with Lore of Light, it's awesome with Lizards. The main weaknesses of Lizards are that have poor WS and I across the army, which are things Light fixes. Life is better for keeping the army alive, which Lizards don't really need- decent Toughness and armour saves and being as close to as Unbreakable as possible without the rule itself (Cold Blooded LD10 with a re-roll).
Essentially, Light will win you games whereas with Life you'll lose less- Life magic will not win you games.
The second level on each of the Priests is unnecessary, and I think you only really need the one scroll if you take Becalming.
Some things you'll see in just about every Lizards list are at least 2 mounted Scar-Vets. My personal favourite builds are Burning Blade, Charmed Shield and Dawnstone for hunting abombs and hydras, and then great weapon, Dragonhelm, Amulet of Itzl and Firefly Venom for smashing up Black Coaches.

Cool, all good advice, I'll work on revising the list a bit and submit another one. Are Chameleon Skinks best at 5 man or would anyone recommend doing 3X10?
Also, since lvl 2 is not worthwhile on the skinks, should I just only have 1 skink priest then?

I like having a lvl1 walking and a lvl1 in an Engine of the Gods. If you split them up well with the slann in the middle it allows for full board coverage...this works great with life or light.
As for the skrox units I actually like the 16/2 builds. it gives me a fast, fear causing flank unit. If your opponent doesnt deal with them they can do some nice wounds and if they spend their time and efforts killing them it means your other units will be able to get where you want them to be...thebiggest downside is they are expensive for what they do.

I'd go with 2 units of 3 salamanders, and remember that a slann takes up 4 slots in a temple guard unit to maybe move things around to get that unit to 21 strong for the extra rank to start?

10k+ High Elf
6.5k Dwarf
7k Original Chaos Dwarf (not the crappy forge world)
6k Bretonnia
7k Wood Elf
6k Dark Elf
8k Tomb Kings
5k Beastmen
5k Lizardmen
7k Daemons of Chaos (roughly 2.5k all but Tzeentch, I find them useless in 8th other than flamers and heralds)
5.5k Empire

Id go 2 diciplines, focus rumination and becalming cogitation, or focus mastery. It will shut down most opp magic phases. Id strongly recommend a steg with engine at that point level. Life is fun too especialy with sauri. I ran a dub slann list with life and death that was fun. Temple guard are meh. A lil to over priced. I suggest dropping the guard and adding more sauri and giving slann crown of command or adding stegie

A few things:
- only getting one spell in Heavens can be rough. That said, Iceshard is always decent. I'd drop it down to one Skink Priest and then one unit of Skink Skirmishers to hide him in.
- Chameleons are stupidly good, but they're still very fragile and fairly expensive. I'd keep the units small, so you can stay out of line of sight longer.
- Salamanders are honestly the best unit in the Lizardmen book. They're a bit focused (they don't do well against low model count and high T), but they're just so good at it.
- Your Temple Guard unit looks small. I'd try fitting in around 25, if possible.
- Skink/Kroxigor units are decent, as are regular Kroxigor. If you dropped them for more Saurus/Temple Guard/Salamanders, those points might perform better, but having at least some high Strength attacks is important.
- Stegadons are okay, but they're spread pretty thin for what they do. They can kind of shoot and kind of fight and are kind of tough.
As for the Engine, I'd point out that the Priest is very, very fragile, that anyone can choose to attack him (how horses get to kick at him onto of his dinosaur is beyond me), and that the Engine doesn't work once he's dead.
- how are you kitting out your Slaan?
@tmarichards: Life is overall a defensive Lore, but it most certainly helps you win games!
Throne of Vines + Cupped Hand is a great combo.
Keeping Saurus alive long enough to attack (or bringing them back from the dead) is just as good as going first.
And finally, Dwellers is probably the best spell. Period. A 50% chance of killing an enemy lvl4 wizard with zero saves, regardless of his items and the unit he's in is sick. Doing so while also killing half of the unit he's in is stupid.
