I have a nephew who is a newbie to the game. He has a liking for Nurgle but is lacking confidence with the mechanics of the game. I thought we would simplify it a bit for him and try his army in smaller chunks.

The core is units of 7 Death Guard so 7 nurgle marines 2 with plasma rifles and 1 Aspiring Champion with Power Fist and Personal Icon.

He has 10 lesser demons and 1 greater demon that he calls in. I am thinking of starting him off small and trying a 1 on 1.

I have most armies so list them off and I am thinking we will do small @ 200 pt battles to get him to understand the game mechanics and the capabilities of his troops.

Any suggestions for opponents will be welcome.

Start it off - 10 dire avengers w exarch w 2 catapults and bladestorm. ( I should die easy but if he sits back and tries to shoot me to death, he will find the DAs can give it out pretty good.)

6 Noisemarines - (He should be able to beat me but if he is nice and close packs his nurglings, one blastmaster template will give me the advantage.)

16 Bloodletters -Should be good for him to see something he doesn't want to get into close combat with.

3 Vypers - Hope he gets his plasma working because otherwise I should be able to pick him off on volume of S6 shots.

Any other good lessons to teach him? Suggestions welcome!

It seems ok. But it doesn't seem balanced. 6 noise marines against 10 demons and plague marines? A bit one sided I think.

I think that's the point...

Try a battle with each force but with varying objectives or terrain to teach him the various mechanics.

Oh in that case it'll be perfect.

I would throw in some necrons as well, cause of the special rules they use.

Maybe some MC?

To the point, I am going to start it simple. His squad costs out around 200 points. I want him to get comfortable with his plague marines first of all. Once he is confident with them I think I will add the 10 Lesser Demons and the greater deamon but then I will face him off against @ 400 points of stuff.

So first off is giving him 200 point opponents then we will start upping the ante. He is just getting overwhelmed with what all his stuff can do as well as lacking a comfort level in the flow of the game. I figure with 200 point battles we can probably do 5 or 6 matchups in a short time and he will gain an understanding of what his core (nurgle marines) are good at and where they are weak.

Start him on squad vs squad in a variety of different scenarios and terrain.
Then, as he gets more confident, help him write a 500 point list try to include some vehicles then play with that across various scenarios and terrain.
Make sure to use a purposely underpowered list but not too underpowered since he needs something of a challenge.

Start on squad of marines vs. squad of marines. Then build it up. Two squads, special chars, vehicles, the lot. And rap up the 'corse' with a 500ish pts game. Then, he's got the rules, and can (hopefully) run on his own momentum.

Procrastinating.

You could also, when he has a larger army , try him against gunline guard or something.
