Looking to make a 2000 point army with an optional 500 to add on when needed. I already have a 10 man ASM squad with 2 flamers, plasma pistol and PF, and am planning 2 more 10 man squads with 2 meltas, PF and plasma pistol each.

I will also be running a 10 man DC w/ Lemartes. Is it worth it to keep pistols and CC weapons? Should I worry about power weapons with these guys?

And then there are the Vanguard vets, I KNOW I want the pistols on these guys, and the PF on the sergeant. But I'm wondering how many power weapons are useful.

I guess I'm asking, do I have enough meltas? How do I make a good balance of weapons in a DOA army without wasting points?

“Yesss! Just as planned!”

There's not much reason to give VVs ranged weapons. Honour Guard are a vastly superior short range firepower platform.

Oh. and conventional wisdom does hold that JP Death Company are terrible and way overpriced, because of Rage.

I haven't actually fielded my vanguard vets yet.... so take this with a grain of salt, but here's how I'm kitting them -

5 man squad w/ thunder hammer, 2x power swords, 2x melta bombs.

5 man squad w/ power fist, 2x power swords, 2x melta bombs.

2 separate squads, so I can roll for them to come in individually for black rage (better chance of ONE of them getting it), and so I will always get at least one squad in on turn 2.

I think the 2 swords + fist gives me enough CC ability to kill dev squads / longfangs / broadsides, ect, while the 2x melta bombs + fist gives me enough anti-vehicle they can kill those too.

at 220 and 215 points each, they don't break the bank, but seem like they should be able to pave the way for the rest of my army to come in safely.

the problem with vanguard vets is most people kit them out with power weapons or power fists for each model. although that can get expensive it causes a big problem with survivability. yes you can charge just about anything and wipe it out in one turn but your sitting there taking shots during your opponents turn. i find that you can do alot better if you keep the unit at about 5 man units with 2x storm shields, a fist and 1 lightning claw on 2 guys. this way you can still kill your target and have a better chance at surviving during your opponents turn if your smart. however if you go with 5 man units your gonna want at least 2.

then there is always running a good sized unit at about 8-10 man strong with a few power weapons and a fist. you get more attacks out of it and have better results while still being about avg cost (250-300 pts roughly). but just like RAS its rarely a good idea to have them run around on their own

as for DC figure out what your wanting to do. most of the time they are a waste of points. however with relentless you can utilize them as a purely shooting element to your force, even with jump packs pumping out bolter rounds and assualting after can usually do some decent dmg against just about anything. but i usually see DC taken in storm raven lists just to have access to DC dreads
