I'm working towards finishing 750p of dark eldars and created this blog thread to keep me motivated and maybe get some suggestions for painting techniques and colors.

The basic look of the army will be very dark metal lined with red/orange and very bright highlights on the edges. I really like copper and gold on my models which will come through in a lot of details. The concept of the army willl be a lot of very fast moving units that hit hard (and probably die horrible fast when things go wrong), a concept which suits a DE list pretty well.

I've managed to finished two reavers so far, and am more satified with the second one (right in the picture) as the edges looks a bit brighter and the metal look is more distinct. The colors do look a bit different in reality. The left model have a magnet on the underside to connect grav talons or cluster caltrops.

Nearly all of the rest of the army (exept two venoms I haven't recived yet) is basecoated, magnetized and just awaiting some paint.

Now I just need a name for the army.

Great start! I agree with you, the one on the right does look better with the more extreme highlights. It's hard to tell in the photo exactly what you did with the darker parts of the orange, looks almost like you sponged it and then used a brush to highlight the edges. Really cool effect hower you did it.

Nice that you guys like it.

I bought a new very bright orange color (Orange fire by Valejo) which is used on by the left model as highlight on the edges. The right one has a mixed orange color which didn't turn out as bright. I generally made the edge highlighting a bit wider on the left one.

I'm working on a third reaver and hope I can replicate the nice highlighting by going through these steps:

The metal base color of the reaver is made with 50/50 gunmetal and chaos black.

The edges are done with colors in this order:
Mechrite Red, Bloody Red(Vallejo), (I then wash the whole area with Baal Red), Orange fire(Valejo), Edge highlights with white, or white mixed a bit with orange.

It look good so far.

Nice paint scheme so far. By the way, you'll want to look into a replacement for those flimsy GW flight stands pretty soon, they are made of extremely brittle plastic. I replaced them on my Reavers with some made from thick cardboard, the handles of some cheap paint brushes from Wal-Mart (30 for $2, can't beat 'em!) and some green stuff to strengthen the bond. Unless you're REALLY careful, which would be a job in and of itself. Can't wait to see more.

My biggest problem with the stands so far is that the bikes falls off and won't really stick on the top ball. But I know they are fragile as I've broken some for my land speeders. But I like that they are transparent, I don't know how they would look on sticks.

Do you have any pictures on your bases?

The third reaver is ready now and turned out pretty ok. Will fix a picture when I got the time.

I finally have some progress updates for this project, complete with some images of ten Kabalite warriors I just got finished.
I could spend a lot more time with them as there's always some detail I seem to have missed. But the goal is to get them to table top quality.... at least for now.

I had some problems with transfering the images from the camera, the Canon program keep crashing, and I have problems with getting some good images. It seems like the lights at my desk are too weak and the colors doesn't come out correct, the edges look a bit more orange in real life. I will look into adding some more light and maybe use a daylight bulb.

Two of the guys are magnetized, one to make a Sybarite (if I ever wanted) and one to switch the shredder with some of the other weapons. I didn't magnetize the blaster as I probably always will run with it in one unit.

Magnetized arms to replace the shredder if needed.

Potential Sybarite

Next target: 10 wyches

Good looking warriors Kajon. We have very similar styles and painting philosophy, you can always come back and get more work on them. Looking good though.

I am now accepting commissions for any hobby project! I've been in the hobby since '92. Specializing in traditional brush methods, creating a gritty dark aesthetic. From single character models to entire armies. From individual terrain pieces to entire table tops. From tabletop level to masterclass level painting. From purchasing and assembly to leveling up your assembled armies paint job. If it has to do with the hobby I can do it! Hit me up and let's chat about your project!
