So I have entered a painting contest along with Loki Kaden(his blog here), where we have to do three unit's, I have decided to do my SM Command Squad, a Vindicator, and a special Character for Beastmen(unfortunately we have to do things from two differnt game systems, I only play 40K). I decided I may as well share my progress with millions of people I don't know on the internet. The whole thing must be finished by November 13th, so I have a lot of work cut out for me.

First off is my Command Squad. The colour scheme for my Marines is white, with silver trim. I've tried a few differnt methods so far, some worked, some have not. If you look in my gallery, there are some really badly painted marines, but I'd like to think I've improved somewhat since then. I kitbashed Dark Angels robes, some random Black Templar bits, other SM pieces Imperial Fist bits, and the Command Squad box together to get these guys.

Then after that I began painting the robes. I decided to start with them because of all the drybrushing, and they are also the largest surface area on the models. I did the colouring by starting off with Mechrite Red, then a wash of Ogryn Flesh. Once that dried, I began a whole lot of drybrushing, starting with scab red, then Blood red, and for a final highlight, Macharius Solar Orange. This stage of painting took me about two and a half hours for all five models.

Next I started work on the second most daunting task of this squad, painting the white armour. As previously mentioned, I have tried some methods in the past which turned out bad, but this one I am happy with. I did a basecoat of astronomicon Grey, followed by washign all the white area's with badab black. Next I used Fortrss grey as a highlight, leaving some of the washed area's of Astronomicon grey visible at the edges. So far the armour has taken me about four hours over the past week.

My next step is to ad the final highlight of skull white to the armour, then begin painting all the metallic area's. I hope to finish painting the white after work tonight, and have the squad finished before I go out for Halloween on Monday night. So far I've been working on the squad for about a week and a half, so I should be able to finish them soon. I'm just not looking foreward to painting the banner. I have no idea what to do. If anyone has any suggestions for the banner, I'm more then willing to think about them. The fluff for my army is they are fleet based, as their homeworld had been annihilated by Hive Fleet Leviathan, there are only about 200 marines left, but they have a close relationship with the Deathwatch. All of my tanks will be names after Russian cities, and my special characters are names after famous Russian people. This command squad will have names including Stalin, Trotsky, and Lenin, but I still need to think of the other two. I'm trying to avoid any real world symbols such as the Hammer & sickle.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated, same with suggestions.

A strange place

The combination of white and red is very striking.

And i'm intressed in how the white will evolve, seeing as i'm eyeing for a white colourscheme as wel.

Liking what you've got going. As for making banners

http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?p=260539#post260539

So using this method you can find images and copy/paste the banner format.Print out some image of their 'lost world' or a space vista with ships in the background etc. Or if you have a decent freehand you can grey scale the image/just print the outline and paint it up. That's what I do with the shoulder decals.
