Just decided to write something about my marine chapter. its only a rough draft and I will post more here soon. Yes it's long but i think its worth it if you just read a little and give it a shot. Critiques are very much appreciated, just reading it and letting me give something back to the community is too!
Cato clenched his bolter as the Drop Pod shook from its decent onto Yara II. The G's pushed his body into his seat as the sheer force shook him and his comrades violently. He was not afraid, not even the slightest bit nervous; for he was a space marine, and space marines know no fear.
This was his first mission as a battle brother of the Black Crosses, and their mission was to exterminate Eldar Farseers in hiding. The Farseers caused the loss of imperial men and supplies, The Black Crosses jobs were to make sure they never hindered the Imperium again.
Cato looked out the window pane in front of him to see the planet coming into view. It was green, lush, and beautiful but considered a Death World. This excited Cato as he eagerly waited for the hatches to open and bolter fire to erupt. For one, he never killed any Eldar, and two he was finally a battle brother, now able to dawn the silver and black power armor of his previous comrades.
The excitement passed in his belly when he was hit with a moment of pride. He had spent years of training, years of physical exercise to get to this point… this moment of triumph.
"Brother Cato," he heard his captain say to him over the Radio.
"Yes brother captain?" Cato replied.
"Do the chapter proud," he said barely loud enough for Cato to hear him.
Cato grinned under his helmet and clenched the drop pods hand rails as it plummeted down to the surface. Their pod was but of 20 in this assault.
“10 seconds” Cato heard his squad’s Sergeant say over the Comm.
Cato felt a punch on his arm and looked to his left. It was Amadeus, one of his squad mates. Cato nodded as the drop pod smacked into the ground.
The doors opened as it depressurized, making steaming noises. As sunlight filled the door way the Astartes jumped out of their transport.
The plan was to surround the Eldar position with a drop pod assault and attack from all directions, the Eldar obviously aware of their imminent doom.
“Let’s move men!” yelled Sergeant Augustus.
One by one the Marines moved out of the pod and into the jungle. The light above them went away as they entered the dense jungle in front of them. Sounds of birds and other indigenious creatures echoed through the jungle as the forest seem to be living itself.
“They’re going to ambush us…” Augustus’s voice said quietly over the Comm.
Cato looked around, his HUD not identifying any threats. Then for half a second Cato saw a blip on his motion tracker.
“Sergeant, I’ve got movement,” Cato said into his Comm looking behind at Sergeant Augustus.
“Could be Rangers, could be a bird,” the sergeant replied,
“Keep your eyes peeled, men.”
The 10 man squad continued through the forest in a patrol formation, scanning the surrounding area for any movement.
“We’re 1500 meters away from the Eldar strongho-“
Suddenly Shuriken fire erupted at the marines. Cato ducked out of the way and hid behind a tree like the other marines; all unsurprised by the fire. This was expected, of course. Rangers usually fought this way.
Cato looked down at his arm to see a shuriken stuck in his bracer. He pulled it out thanking the emperor it didn’t penetrate his armor.
“Use your motion trackers, 2 o’clock”
Cato stood up behind the tree and saw a few blips on his HUD. He knew exactly where they were. He remembered a small ridge 20 meters to his right, and on the HUD that’s where the blips were; 20 meters to his right.
The other Astartes had already figured that out, as there was bolter fire erupting from all around Cato.
Cato glanced out of the tree to see a silhouette peeping out of the ridge. He quickly aimed his bolter and pulled the trigger.
*BAM*
He saw the silhouette explode and to his surprise a Guardian corpse fell lifelessly over the ridge and into plain sight. What struck Cato is that it wasn’t a ranger, it was a Guardian.
Suddenly a rocket hit the ridge flinging 3 Guardians into the air. Their bodies flew for what seemed like a minute, but in reality it was a mere second. As they hit the ground in front of the marines they were barraged by bolter fire. They were probably already dead from the blast but marines never take unnecessary risks.
“Filthy xenos,” Cato heard one of his brothers say.
“Move up brothers,” said the sergeant now next to Cato. The Sergeant looked down to see the corpses of the Guardians.
“Why would they even try to attack us? 100 of them couldn’t take one of us…” murmured Augustus.
Sergeant Augustus was a sight to see. A huge blue power fist and a bolter were intimidating in itself, but carried by a man whose armor bore the battle scars of 30 campaigns was another thing entirely. Cato felt an inspiring presence by the man, he was someone Cato wanted to be when he grew older.
Cato advanced stepping over his kill and walking in front of his sergeant. The Guardians head was missing and so was a part of its chest. He smiled at the thought of his first Eldar kill, it was a moment he would remember.
Cato kept his eyes opened to see if there were any more ambushes. The sergeant had a point, how could a few guardians hope to fight off even one Astartes. This bothered Cato, something just wasn’t right here.
As they continued Cato heard engine noises erupting from nearby, the sound came from a predator tank with two dreadnoughts moving slowly behind. The predator, in front, crashed through the thick jungle, toppling over trees with its iron will clearing a path for the dreadnoughts.
“The Armored 4th,” said Flamer Brother Max who moved behind Cato.
“2nd Squad, fall behind 4th!” ordered Augustus.
The men obeyed and fell in behind the dreadnoughts. Cato had only met one of the two before, and it was a long time ago, when he was a scout sniper. His name was Varo and from what Cato could tell he was a very proud veteran.
By now Cato could see a strange towering alien building above the canopy. It wasn’t that tall, probably only 4 stories. Now the squad had to set up a position around the building, unload, and then mop up survivors. Orders were to kill the Farseers on sight.
With the structure in view the Astartes set up position 100 yards away, and by now the forest was crawling with other marine squads converging from all sides toward the structure.
“Squads, sound off…” the captain said over the comm.
“1st squad reporting”
Cato cringed at hearing 1st squad sounding off. It was pure jealousy, the fact that he wanted to be an assault marine and wasn’t lit a small fire in his belly. But he shrugged it off, “something to work for” he told himself.
“2nd squad here,” Sergeant Augustus said.
“3rd squad here,”
The squads sounded off until 15th reported.
“Get into position and get ready to open fire…” The Captain ordered.
Cato and his brothers took aim at the alien structure.
Cato looked to his left to see Amadeus aiming his weapon as well. Cato knew this wasn’t a time to be asking questions, but he decided to anyway.
“Why is there no resistance, brother?” Cato asked Amadeus.
“They’re afraid… probably hiding in a bunker below the surface. We weren’t the only ones that encountered guardians, brother; our brothers probably killed the majority of them already,” He replied calmly.
Cato nodded and turned back to the structure.
“Fire.”
A hail of a magnificent destruction unleashed itself onto the structure, ripping it apart from all sides. The prism-like structure burst into pieces and fell on itself as bolters, lascannons, and missles tore it apart.
The fact was, it was sad. Sad for the building that’s fate had been sealed by the awesome power of the Emperor’s angels of death. As the structure turned into dust and bits of shrapnel, Cato couldn’t help but wonder how stupid it would’ve been to be in the structure at that time. But Cato knew something wasn’t right… something in his gut told him so.
“Cease fire brothers!” It was the captain again.
The firing stopped immediately at the voice of the captain.
“2nd and 3rd move up to inspect”
“That’s us, let’s go.” Sergeant Augustus said.
The squad crept through what remained of the jungle and headed towards the ruined structure. When they reached it, they met up with 3rd squad who came in from the opposite side. The
building was probably 20 yards square, which was pretty small. It was hard to believe they were hiding Farseers in this weak building.
But then someone in 3rd squad pointed out a tunnel bulk head door below the rubble. It was golden and incrusted with diamonds and jewels.
“Let’s get it open then!” 3rd squad’s sergeant said.
“First we tell the Captain… brother Maltus,” Augustus said with an annoyed tone.
“Yes, of course… Augustus,” Sergeant Maltus replied. The man bearing the Black Crosses silver power armor looked more machine than man. His skin split between his face. One side was of flesh, the other of metal, and his two glowing red eyes didn’t give him any humanity.
“Brother Captain, this is 3rd squad, we’ve surveyed the ruin, no bodies were found but we did find an entrance to what looks like an underground bunker,” Sergeant Maltus said over the Comm.
“See, I told you Brother Cato,” Amadeus said.
“Good call,” Cato replied.
“Affrimative Sergeant, Proceed inside, use melta charges if you have to, report your findings once you AND 2nd squad enter.” The captain said emphasizing on the word “and”.
Maltus turned to one of his marines and nodded. The marine moved in front of Cato’s squad and pulled out a melta charge. But before he could even arm it Sergeant Augustus unexpectedly pushed him out of the way.
“Excuse me brother,” Augustus said as he lifted his power fist in the air.
With a yell Augustus slammed the Fist into the golden door smashing a hole in it. He hit again and again until he made a hole large enough to fit 3 Astartes in at once.
“A little unnecessary don’t you think brother?” asked Malus looking down the hole.
“It’s a Grav-Way,” said Augustus ignoring Maltus’s comment predominantly noting that now was not the time for rivalry, “it could be a trap.”
Cato itched for some action and he could tell the others did as well. His trigger finger was itchy and he was anxious to get another kill. His appetite was finally appeased when the Sergeants called for frag grenades to be thrown down, which he and his other brothers happily helped with.
As they heard the explosions echo below they decided it was time to send in the Astartes.
“Cato, you have the honor of being first,” Sergeant Augustus said.
Cato felt privileged but wary of Sergeant Maltus. He told himself he would always protect any of his brothers, even if there was a rivalry between squads. That in itself made him trust Maltus, as Maltus was his brother.
Cato stood over the large hole in the bulk door. It was pitch black and it seemed like it could go down very far.
“Go.”
Cato jumped through the hole and suddenly felt his body pulled down at an alarming, but yet at a steady speed. He landed softly, reaching the bottom, and was surprised to see two shrapnel covered Eldar corpses lying near the Grav-Way.
“Send more down, Two Eldar KIA,” said Cato over the Comm, “No others in sight.”
It was rather dim in the alien structure, even though the walls were gold and jewel encrusted. The room had to have been double the size of the structure above. Around the room there were strange alien devices but it seemed deserted.
Amadeus landed behind him.
“Two more down,” Amadeus said walking over the corpses.
More and more marines came down the lift until there were 10: 8 Battle brothers, and two Sergeants.
“We’re inside the bunker room, It’s a rather large room and two Eldar were killed from frag grenades,” Said Augustus over the comm.
“
Affirmative Sergeant, I will send in two more squads, 2nd and 3rd squad will proceed to search the facility, find those Farseers, it is the emperor’s will,” The captain spoke over the comm.
“You heard the man, remaining brothers come down the grav-lift, my squad go through that corridor, and begin your search” said Sergeant Augustus, “I will send our other brothers elsewhere.”
