I'm looking into buying some White Lions for my High Elf army but looking at their stats it would seem Swordmasters are better.

Are White Lions worth using?

How big should the unit be?

How should I rank them up for them to be effective?

I take WL over SM when I play.

I use them in a horde of about 40+. I like them better than SM because they have a 3+ armor save which I hope to use against shooting against them to help them survive better than SM while they are marching across the board hoping to get into combat. The SM only have a 5+ armor save against shooting, so I feel it's less likely more of them will be around when they get accross the board. Plus, I like the S6 attacks against bigger monsters, MI, and high armor opponents.

my 2c.

Would a unit of 20 be viable?

Yeah, I've seen 20 be viable. You could also run several small units of 10. That way you cause target saturation and there are too many of them to shoot to stop 1-2 of them reaching the line. However, at that point, they are better off flank charging or dealing with smaller units or war machines.

They are awesome with stubborn and if your going against t4 infantry or knights they are a must have . Swordmasters are deadly but should always be supported and screened . Phoenix guard are tanks with teeth and will serve you better if your going against a torrent of fire . Ive bought a bunch of all three as I find they will always find a place at some point . I usually run with 21 at 7 wide as they always seem to take a hit before combat. Ha hordes of any of the three isn't something to overlook though . Just pretty much depends on what you want to do with tactics

I usually see WL in units of 20+ where SMs are better in small hitman units under 20.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
-Alexis de Tocqueville.
