Let's start off. What do the majority of people do to counter your Drop Pod Assault. They reserve a real nuisance to your Alpha Strike, but what If I told you this could be massively to your advantage. I guess you wouldn't believe me. I know I wouldn't.

Well the Basic framework is Captain Erasmus Tycho, not Death company Tycho just normal, the reason being you want that LD 10 for all your units. You want space marine squads in your First wave, PF's on you Sargeants like any squad should have and the rest however you want. But I recommend you have enough to cover the board edge your landing on. Get what I'm hinting at?
A long range Marine unit. Devestators work great. I personally would make them the whole first wave since you won't have much more than 5 Drop Pods. They must be maxed and have a PF. Have one Squad take Tycho if you have 5-6 Drop Pods in the list. If more stick him with Sternguard or a Tactical squad.

Drop in cover their Board edge and use the Pods to go behind the squads for the pure reason of cover if something gets in from another Board edge. Just hug the Board edge allowing no room and cover it all. Now if they come in from that board edge they shall be destroyed if on foot or in a Non Tank or Skimmed/Jetbike. Now if their in a tank you go for the Death or Glory and hope for the best Tychos LD 10 should help you get to choose everytime.

The other point with the Drop pods behind means that their vehicles won't escape your grasp and flee and have to shoot them instead of your Devestators.

Anyway, please comment and Discuss
I call it the Blood Angels Decent Screen.

Works even better with Black Templars: You don't auto-drop on turn one, so you get your alpha strike anyway, removing the need for dropping close to the mishap-causing board edges.

You've got a point. Yet you can drop in 13" out and worst case scenario end up 25" away which loses 6" and your Running.

Use SW with long fangs and dakka dreads to get emty pods.

If he reserves just drop down the emty once. If not, drop down melta spam.

How small are your boards? but trying to cover an entire edge is virtually impossible. If you stretched a ten man squad with only 3 models able to threaten a tank, then a tank can avoid them, then the forced move would have all the unit moving to one side or the other leaving a huge gap for anything else to come on.

All you need to do is build a balanced drop pod list.
Have some long range threat.
Have some pods that are not as powerful, like 5 tac. marines designed to be a late objective claimer. So you can wait for a big target to arrive.
Also have some mobility in your army.

If you played against IG and they have castled with troops giving a 6'' barrier to their tanks and you have only brought meltas then sure any list will struggle.

I agree with MFletch. Given terrain, and scatter, I doubt you will be able to cover an entire long board edge with 10 man units of infantry. I have seen the picture of the tournament, where the kroot infiltrate the entire board, but I would say thats very rare and situational.

Honestly, this is a dick move in a friendly game.

I think you might be able to pull it off if you had at least 7 pods. That way you could drop 4 10-man squads on turn 1. You'd need to go first. You'd need the disembark move, run and another movement phase to get them all in position before your opponent starts to bring on his reserves. One disembark and run wouldn't get you spread out enough. Might be possible with three pods if you got good drops.

I don't think it's viable strategy. It depends too much on getting first turn and getting a good drop. One board edge mishap and if fails. I suppose you could infiltrate scouts with beacons, but then you're really building to this one strategy. It wouldn't work against Dark Eldar, Mechdar, mech wolves, DoA angels, etc etc.

I agree about all you've said, and in hindsight I realise its to specialised to be called a Viable Tactic.

But it has got a good basing, adapting it slowly could create a Box time affect meaning your firesquads are out of effective assault range and stopping all Escape whereas you have your heavy hitting CC squad IE DC with a Chaplain within the Box. It would stop them Kiting your ranged squad so easily. And still pen them in.

The thing is, if he's not going first, the enemy is either going to deploy something, which means you have a target, or the enemy's gonna reserve everything, meaning it doesn't matter.

A good plan A is the fact that you can grab 3 dakka dreads and deploy them on the table. Give each of them emty drop pods and you can counter a reserve move, and have an army with 6 pods at least.

If he deploys fully I get my Alpha Strike taking out most of the Armour. If he deploys a squad I vaporise them with Shooting and If he deploys nothing then what I said above still happens.

I don't see what your getting at?
