Just saw this reply on the GW Facebook page in response to some particularly harsh criticism now, in my opinion this is a marvellous bit of 'slap down'. Seriously. It's great. I think there's far too much hostility to whatever GW do, there are as many GW haters as fanboys and they're both as bad as each other. GW do actually make a good point on this I think. I'll just say I'm not a fanboy BTW.

On the subject of open discussion however, the criticism of a book that has not even been released yet is a little unfair - yes, some of the background about the C'tan has changed - after all, this game is based around armies and mortal(ish) creatures, not Gods. What hasn't changed is that the Necron race has always wanted to overthrow the Old Ones and their servants and take what belonged to them (ie: the galaxy) While the Old Ones may now be long dead, there is still a galaxy full of their creations to kill - the Necrons have certainly not forgotten their ancient war all those millions of years ago. When the book comes out, have a good read of it - the background stories and the unit bestiaries are superb, and it is very, very different to any other army out there (yes, even Tomb Kings - there's no sand involved for a start).

I'll say it again. People who moan about their Necrons being changed between two books need to go read Epic Hive War and the second edition Tyranid codex. Then the 3rd edition book. Then the 4th. Then the 5th.

Army fluff changes all the time. Necron players are acting as if they're sole victiims of fluff abuse.

There aren't any snakes or sphinxes either, nor are they led by mighty clownlord Nagash, but it would be difficult to deny that they are faux-Egyptian space undead.

Every faction's fluff has changed a LOT from the early days. We've moved away from what it started as, simply fantasy races in space. That was it. There was no more real depth than that.

That's a pretty excellent response. I myself have been pretty annoyed at some of the people throwing Tantrums about the new fluff, before even reading it.

It seems like they already have their mind made up, and could care less how well written, or the content of it.

And the vast majority of people are fine with it.

Well, for one, Tyranids used to negotiate. This is why they had Zoats.

The silent majority don't necessarily hold opposing views, they just don't shout them from the rooftops.

General angry minority/ silent majority asumptions are bs. For all we know people could be quite angry with some of the more stupid elements of the book ( be it fluff, miniatures or anything else ) but still
buy the Crons because they like other aspects.
If you like tombkings in space then good for you but don't assume that, just because others do not like the new style, their at times justified anger ( after all they invested heavily into the hobby )
is in any way unjustified.

Entirely true, and Rogue Trader was indeed full of oddities, but your examples were 2nd Edition (1993) and Hive War (1995). What substantial changes have been made to the Tyranids' background since then? As it see it, there have been very few in the last 18 years, whereas the Necrons have already been through two complete rewrites since their introduction in 2000 or so. That the Necrons have required constant retonning is a pretty damning indictment of their concept as a whole.

Now I shall suspend judgement until I have read the Codex, but I do not hold out any great hope that I will find the Necrons any less tacked-on and irrelevant once I have done so.

Oh that was the response! Lol, that is pretty good of Games Workshop to do then; especially since they then wrote that the readers should read the codex first (marketing!)

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
