Grot is singular, gretchin is plural. Grots is also used plurally, and I don't think gretchin is ever used as a singular term. They're just two words for the same thing, like Adeptus Astartes and Space Marines.

They just do. It's like how Eldar are space elves to us, pansies to Orks. Call a flower by any other name, and it will still stink, and all that.

Grots and gretchin are the same. Grot is singular, grots is plural. Gretchin is both singular and plural. Not unlike gobbo/gobbos and goblin/goblins in WHFB.

I always thought it was more like:
Squig, Snotling, Grot, Gretchin, Boy, Nob, Boss, Warlord, Squiggoth, Great Squiggoth.
Different names for different sizes of greenskin.

Gretchin is the name of their race, grot is the Ork word for 'slave' or 'servant'.
Pretty much the same word.

Gretchin was used almost exculsively during second edition. At some point, perhaps during the development of Gorkamorka, GW decided grot was a more apt term. So they changed it.
