Ok guys, time to hit up the dakka community once again for all your worldly knowledge on all things paint related. Last month i started a blog about creating my own textured gaming board. There is a blog that iv started on here but havent been able to update it as iv hit a massive wall!!!! The basics of the board are 3 2x4 boards, covered with polysterene boards then coated in a mix of emulsion mixed with sand and other various small gravels. The affect this has created is similar to concrete which looks great!

I then undercoated the boards in black!....So far so good. Heres where it gets tricky. I first got into GW stuff about 15yrs ago and recently got back into it. After finding all my old paints and being used to getting the required or intened result sing those i thought id stick with them and buy a couple of the new ones to bulk things up. ( i must admit, the old 90's paints have held up well for being sat in a cold wet garage for 15years, about 90% of them are still fine and good to use) Now as im kinda of an old dog, i still paint using old paints and techniques which by todays with many paint schemes are pretty out dated. When i first started painting, to get a good pavement or stone colour the idea went;

Shadow grey dry brush over black, then codex grey etc to add subtle highlights til you reach the affect you want.

So i set out following this, stupidly thinking i had more of the shadow grey than i actually did i used it all up on the first board. The end results looked amazing. then i popped to get ahnother pot of it. Did exactly the same and the difference in tones are like two completely different colours.......I know some of you must be thinking, what did you really expect with an age gap of that size, of corse the paints would come out different. Anyways the problem now is that i cant match it anymore and what Im asking the dakka crew is.....

CAN ANYBODY SUGGEST ANY OTHER CURRENT COLOUR TO USE OR DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON ALTERNATIVE PAINT SCHEMES THAT WOULD LOOK GOOD???

No ideas will be thrown out cos somebody could well throw in an idea or colour scheme that i havent even really concidered yet. The basic board is jus rough and Iv decided to make it look like an urban setting like it may well have been set in a city. Buildings and other scenery wont be a problem to match from here on out aslong as i get a decent base colour for the board itself. Any solutions will be greatly recieved

Peace, love and respect!!!!!

If you're working on a gaming board, I would not suggest using the small GW pots. Go out a and pick up some cheap acrylic paints and use those. Especially if your just doing a plain old dirt board.

If you going to to an urban one, stick to the grey I'd say. Go pick up a good size bottle of black and white from an art and crafts store. IMO repaint it black and re-drybrush it all. Just mix the grey you want in ample supply and go over it all again.

Honestly, a little color variation isn't a bad thing for a terrain board. If you're looking to emulate concrete or asphalt, having two completely different grays right next to each other in distinct patches (as opposed to slight variations spread across the board) might look a bit odd, though.

I'd heartily recommend using cheap craft paint, like Warpseer (although I wouldn't bother mixing my own gray when the stuff is so cheap and numerous shades of gray are already available). Latex house paint is another option - you can often find it for dirt cheap at home improvement stores if you can find sample sized cans (likely enough for your purpose) or mis-mixed custom colors.

For uniformity's sake, I'd give a quick spray of black over what you've already done. Drybrushing is quick, so you won't lose much time or effort and will end up with a more coherent finish on your table. If you're really dead set on getting the same finish and you have enough of the old paint left to make a sample swatch, you can probably get a DIY store to mix you up a pint of house paint in that shade.

What I would do is get a color swatch of the original color (on cardboard is a good idea), and get a cheap latex paint match at your local hardware store.

It doesn't need to be high quality paint, because it's just terrain, ya know?

They do sell latex paint thinners, in case the viscosity was a worry.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Oadie, thanks. its looking more like going to a craft shop and getting a paint that suits or best matches what i want. I have already done the re-coat of black. I just need to blue thats close to the orginal shadow grey and work up from there. I have concidered using a grey for the first dry brush coat but i dont think that will give the good depth of colour and shade. I use the dry brush to gradually build up the difference in contours and crevases that you would find on a battle feild. the other alternative of corse is starting with brown. But I have no clue at all where to start that!
