Can you take Dedicated Transports that are not linked to a squad? The relevant rules simply say "...may take a *****" and the DT rules only list them as they may be taken and they are not part of the normal FOC. I don't see anything that is keeping me from taking an empty Rhino or Razorback as backup transports.

Is this correct?

No. DT can only be paid for by the unit that's purchasing them. However, the unit that purchased it does not have to be the unit that uses it. The only restriction is when the game starts, ONLY the purchasing unit may be in it.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Is there a page in the BGB you can point me to?

No. Because you have to be told you're allowed to buy them. Since they are only listed with the unit that can buy them, you cannot buy them separately.

Nope; your thinking is reversed here. There is nothing allowing you to take an empty Rhino or Razorback as a backup transport. The only way the rules allow you to take a unit is within the Force Org structure*; the only place to get a Rhino/Razorback is as a dedicated transport.

*Yes, there are some units that don't "fill" a force org slot; they're still selected within the force org, e.g., the Emperor's Champion is still an HQ choice, even though he doesn't consume the HQ slot.

You will note that the Dedicated transport box-out in the BRB specifically refers to the "Transport Option" units in Codices; so Dedicated transports are defined as those units purchased for other units.

Then you get to the Codices themselves; there are 2 places in them that talk about the Dedicated transports(aside from each individual entry that is allowed to take any DTs, which only tell you which DTs may be taken).

The first is the Armylist page where the FOC is shown ad the unit profiles are broken down, It tells you that that section of the entry will list any Dedicated Transports that the unit can take.

The second is the page where the dedicated Transports are found, It tells you t again reference the BRB and that many units have the option of taking them.

Now going back to the BRB for another point of note; Page 87 discusses Dedicated transports again and their relationship to the FOC: While they occupy no slots(or selections, or whatever you want to call units that fill spaces in the FOC); they are always of the slot/selection/whatever of their parent unit.

Every unit in Warhammer 40k has some relation to the FOC, whether they fill/occupy a slot/selection/whatever or not, they are from either: HQ, Elite, Troop, Fast attack, Heavy support, or now: Spearhead. There is not 1 unit that sits outside of these(Legendary units do not count because Apocalypse games do not use the FOC at all; and Super-heavies/Gargantuan Creatures in Spearhead games are part of the Spearhead slots).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Again, the difference between a permissive rule set and a restrictive rule set

WH40k is permissive = can't do anything unless explicitly allowed to... need permission

restrictive rule set = can't do forbidden activities, otherwise anything goes (really stupid way to run a game system)... avoid restrictions
