This is some fluff to my upcoming Necron army. Its going to be based heavily on pre-columbian Mesoamerican civilizations rather than the more egyptian style of the vanilla 'Crons. So here it is, hope you enjoy it. This is my first real attempt at writting something and english is my secondary language so im sorry if my grammar/vocabulary isnt up to scratch.
Part 1 - Awakening of the Xiuhcoatl.
Are you sure this is the place Yorin?
For the last time yes, I am certain of it! By the Emperor, its not like we're in a hurry.
We've been here for over two hours Yorin, I think that’s plenty. We gotta get back to camp soon, if we’re not back by nightfall the others will begin to worry.
Whats the matter Haeus? Ya scared? Does the jungle give you the creeps? Afraid a Garnack is gonna jump out and get ya?
Shut up, and wipe that silly grin off your face. Man, I would hate to be Mervich right now, he’s been waiting by himself for over 3hours now just because your fat ass couldn’t find its way back to your so called "Find of the Millennia".
"Ohh mate, just wait until you see it... It’s worth the walk... This is sure to make the boss happy, and if the boss is happy I’m happy because I’m getting paid. Let’s keep moving, it’s just around the corner."
The team had been scouring the jungles of Karvaan IV for weeks, searching for a place that may not even exist. A newly colonized planet on the outer rim of the Ultima Segmentum, Karvaan IV was a world filled with unknown dangers, and treasures. This was what Haeus and his team were after. Treasure. Their employer Lord Vardian Kaarax, the planetary governor, had hired Haeus' team of scavengers to quickly and silently locate and collect anything of value or interest that they found on the planet. He was a long time collector of Xeno artifacts and had a good feeling about this world. There had to be something hidden under the canopy. Haeus didn’t really care, he was getting paid a good sum for his services regardless if his team should find anything or not, but it seemed like they had stumbled upon the jackpot now. At least, according to Yorin.
When two men reached a clearing in the jungle, Haeus was at a loss of words. Yorin was right, they really did hit the jackpot this time! A large stone structure atleast 120feet tall ruse up infront of them. The building was covered in strange glyphs, murals and sculptures that Haeus had never seen before. A magnificent sight to say the least. The building was old, very old, covered in vines and moss and decorations that had been eroded by time and the forces of nature. The jungle had swallowed most of the structure but the broad stairway that led up to the top of the pyramid like structure was in good shape. The stairs led up to a opening at the top of the pyramid, but Haeus could not see what was inside from here. There was only darkness.
"Yorin, this is amazing! We'll never have to work again after this! Hell, we could probably buy ourselves our own fething planet with the riches we are bound to find inside!"
"Aye, I told you so! You really ought to have some faith in me lad."
Haeus chuckled and smiled at Yorin.
"I apologize, my friend. Where is Mervich? You said he would be waiting for us?"
"We went up to that room on top of the Pyramid, he is waiting for us up there."
"Well let’s not keep him waiting any longer, I’m sure he is already quite angry with you for taking so long!"
They started their ascent to the top of the stair way. It might have been in good condition compared to the rest of the structure but it was by no means well maintained. There were bits missing everywhere out of the stone blocks, eroded by countless years of use and weathering. The jungle had begun to rec,aim the structure, vines and moss were growing in the cracks in the stone creating another obstacle for the scavengers. When they finally reached the top and entered the room there was no one there to greet them, just the cold, dark, ghostly silence that filled the hall.
"Merv! Get your ass out where we can see you, ya old dog!"
"I don’t think he’s here Yorin... Light up a flair, will you?"
A bright red glow filled the large hall and ate away at the darkness within.
The walls were cold and damp and filled with similar murals as the ones outside. These however, were in much better shape, they seemed to represent stars. Well most of them did anyway. A large snake like body slithered itself around all the stars, filling the entire room. Haeus followed its long, dark red body all the way to the creatures head, which was located over what seemed to be a door. Its eyes were of an otherworldly quality. The serpent was made in a different material, something that Haeus had never seen before. It seemed to be moving all the time, the red colour constantly shifting, like a flame. But there was something different about the eyes, they had a terrifying glow to them. He couldn’t describe it. He found himself chained to its gaze for longer than he would have liked. He finally looked over to Yorin, who was in a corner looking through what looked like Mervichs tool box.
"He left his tools? That’s not like Mervich at all... Something is wrong."
"You can say that again. Ol' Merv wouldnt go anywhere without his stuff... Very odd."
"What do you make of it?"
"There’s no signs of a fire fight. No blood, no bullet casings, no collateral damage as far as I can tell. There’s no signs of a struggle what so ever. It’s like he just vanished into thin air, Sir."
Haeus felt a chill crawl up his spine. Yorin never referred to him as “Sir”. Only in the most dangerous of situations had he used that title to address him. The serpent on the wall wasn’t making things better either. Its gaze was following his every move. He could feel its gaze at the back of his head, staring right through him with those cold, dead, emotionless eyes. Empty. Soulless. By the Emperor he wished he could leave this place to gather his thoughts but he could not. He had to fight it. He had to be strong.
"Are you ok Haeus? You look pale."
"I’m fine... It’s nothing. Do you think he may have found a way to open the door? Maybe he has gone on without us."
"I certainly hope so... Only one way to find out."
Yorin stood up, let out a brief sigh then slowly walked over towards the large door at the back of the hall. He swung his lasgun down from his shoulder and prepared himself for the worst. Haeus followed suit. He readied the bolt bistol he had acquired as payment from his last job and walked towards the door. He never thought he would have to use the damn thing but he was damn glad that he had it now. A bolter could dish out some serious damage, much more than any las weaponry available to him and his team. They stood silent in front of the door for what seemed like an eternity. The flickering of the dying flare lying a few meters behind them was what finally broke the silence.
"Feth, get another one quick before this one runs out!"
"You got it boss."
Yorin reached for another flare but it was too late, the darkness had swallowed them and panic gripped Haeus by the throat.
".... Emperor protect me. I do now wish to die here. Please! No! No! No! NOO! I can’t see a thing except that fething serpents eyes, they are drilling right through my skull I can feel its gaze upon me every single second! Emperor be my shield!"
"Calm yourself boy! Its fine. Nothing is going to happen. Here, I've got the flare now. Everything’s okay Haeus, just relax."
The flare lit up and Haeus let out a sigh of relief, it was as if though a huge weight had been lifted of his shoulders. He didn’t feel so bad now, not even the cursed serpent bothered him anymore. Strange, he thought to himself. Best not to dwell on it.
"Seriously Haeus you need help..."
"Shut it man, it’s that damn snake. Let’s just try and get out of here asap!"
"Fine with me, how do we get this damn thing open? Any ideas?"
"You’re the expert Yorin.""When it comes to Imperial stuff, sure. This thing right here... Not so much. I have no clue how to open it, it doesnt even have a control panel."
The room fell silent again. Yorin began looking closer at the outlines of the door, holding the flare up close to the wall to make sure he didn’t miss anything. He followed the outline until he reached the head of the serpent. The light of the flare lit up its face and showed the great craftsmanship and level of detail that it boasted. It truly looked horrifying. Suddenly a sharp hissing sound rang out from the serpents open mouth and the eyes began shifting colours. After a few seconds they heard a grinding of stones and the door began to open itself.
"Yanqui. Nan Moyolihcatzin"
The serpent hissed in an inhuman voice, Haeus felt his body stiffen. He couldnt move, fear had taken control of his body and wasnt about to let him go. Every inch of his being wanted to scream and run while he still could but he was paralyzed. He found himself looking into the eyes of that ungodly serpent again, he simply couldnt take his eyes off it.
"Haeus? Haeus! Get yourself together man, its just an automated message. Hey, are you listening to me? If you dont snap out of it voluntarily im going to make sure you do, boy!"
Haeus couldnt hear him. He could feel his sanity slowly being drained by this place. He had to get out.
Yorin took action, he walked up to the Haeus and punched him right on the nose. Haeus screamed out in pain and stumbled backwards holding his nose with both hands.
"What... What the hell did you do that for Yorin?! Whats wrong with you?"
"I should ask you the same question. You were just standing there, completely still and mumbling to yourself while staring at that cursed serpent that you cant seem to get enough of! Lets keep going now. Quickly, I want to get out of this place as fast as possible. I dont like it, not one bit."
Haeus agreed and the two men began their descent into the darkness...
