Hello all,
My SM army is in need of some balance, and I'm looking at maybe adding 2x HB/MM Landspeeders, and an Assault Squad in rhino...
does anyone know if the Assault box comes with regular backpacks... I'm wanting to give them all pistol and chainsword, except the Sgt. will get SS/LC... and maybe magnetize him to swap gear for TH/SS, or SS/PW???
Is there a better way to get pistol and chainsword marines? are those arms in a Tac Sqd. box?
any help would be good. let me know if 10 Assault Marines in a Rhino is any good, my list will basically be a Mech. Spearhead type, with everything in a Rhino/Razorback, or in a Landraider....
So far I have 2 sets of AOBR, a LRC, and a Razorback kit....
Thinking of 3-4 Tac. Squads
transport of some sort for all
2 speeders, 2 predators,
an assault squad in rhino,
some shooty Termies with Lysander,
and maybe Shrike, probably with an assault squad in jump packs.
I just don't know if the assaulties in rhino is a good choice, or easily modeled...

Do you not have extra backpacks? Do you need some? (I haven't bought an assault squad since they were metal so I don't know the answer)

I would recommend buying a tactical squad then buying the arm bits from a online bits store. Will be much cheaper.

They come with regular backbacks. 5 in each box, and also 5 jumppacks. you can also give them all pistols and chainswords. The box aslo contains one Pfist, a plasma pistol, two power weapons (an axe and a sword), melta bombs, and a combat shield which you can model to be a SS.
With the LC though, you'll have a harder time. There's one in the Captain box, I believe. There are also LCs on terminator box sets, which may be a good buy if you would want Assault Terminators in the future since you'll have 5 TH, 5 SS and 10 LC arms (5 left hands and 5 right hands) in that box. You can even convert your AOBR terminators into Assault termies with those pieces!

Awesome info, I might look into Assault Termies... I've been wondering how to use the Tactical Termies well, so far they're ... meh ... I could use the bits to make some AOBR termies into Assault ones, then use one SS on the Assault Sgt., and maybe a LC too, or .... I'm thinking of getting a Tactical Squad and an Assault box, then I can make them all, and have some bits to make alternate marines for my AOBR sets...
So, my shopping list:
1 SM Commander box
2x Tactical Squads
Assault Squad
2 Speeders
2 Predators
2 Razorbacks
one of most of the rest, 2 of some ... LOL
and some bits once I have it all sorted...
NO, Brotherjulian, I have few extra bits, started with 2 sets of AOBR, no bits there, and have added so far a LRC and Razorback...
Are there any users of a 10man assault sqd. in rhino? is it a good unit? And how do you use Tac. Termies, anyway?

In vanilla marines, the general consensus is that Assault Marines are uncompetitive, unless you run them with Shrike on JPs.

Thank you, I had looked into a Shrike list, but have since decided on Sternguard and Pedro, and Capt. Lysander to make my AOBR termies usable...
Anyone have Terminator Cyclone Missile Launchers they'd part with?

The assault marine box comes with:
5 torsos with straps (to use with JPs)
5 regular torsos
5 jump packs
5 regular backpacks
Chainswords, bolt pistols, and some upgrades for the sgt.
I think that Assualt Marines can be competetive, even without Shrike. They can deal some damage with a chaplain.
The only downside to the Rhino is that it is not an assault vehicle, so you spend a turn shooting instead of assaulting, which can result in you getting charged first (and if you run a chappy that means missing 10 extra rerollable hits)
