So im starting a second army and its between Eldar and the new Necrons. I'm tempted by Eldar because of the variety and style of the models, and its very far from what i usually play (Space Wolves) in style, statlines, list building etc. I'm also tempted by the new Necrons and im picking up the codex tomorrow. What speaks against them though is that they seem somewhat similar to my current style of play, which with SW is close range shooty lists, with counter-assault capabilites. Now, does anyone know more about Necrons and how they're intended to work? I don't want another army that plays very similar to my current one, and i don't like the models as much as i like the eldar. Need help in deciding!

Well, pick up both codexes, and have a read.

Since the new Necrons just came out, people are going to be finding their new groove for a while, but it seems that there will be multiple playstyles available.

If you want a different playstyle, go for eldar. Theyre fun and there are not many of them, so youd help to bring some balance into the world of 40king. I mean, how many noobs are going to pick up crons just because theyre cool and new?

There are actually quite a few people with eldar armies in my gaming club, although none of them are really dedicated Eldar players.

It is as you say though, and many will just start necrons because they're new and shiny.

Since i love the models of Eldar, and the challenge of painting them i think i'll eventually end up with these guys

I wouldn't go with eldar till they get a new book. The current book was made during the time of less is more, and copy paste codex design... Its a copy of the things from the previous book, but with all the cool and good things striped out for about the same point costs. Last ed they weren't too bad due to how skimmers worked and how neutered the other books were also... but in this edition you are paying too many points for what is mostly crap. They have a few units that are efficient enough that with a delicate hand you can nurse them to a victory against even tough armies (though not so easy if play skill is same and enemy army is superior... can't help a weak book that much)

If you don't mind the fact that most of the units aren't very good, that you will be constantly fighting the lack of platforms (super specialists means that you half as many units in each role compared to balanced units, which allows savvy opponents to snipe out critical things like your anti tank...) then eldar are interesting play style that rewards play skill better than a marine army can. They also look pretty good if painted well.

Necrons are looking like they will be pretty good in this edition, their limited choices are giving way to real choices, their power level is on par with the top armies (where it will fit in in a "metagame" is yet to be seen) They have new and interesting units, units that can fulfill multiple roles, and their units are really resilient for their points cost. Their fluff is a weak point, but they are necrons... their fluff has been the weakest part of them. At least now you can give them some more personality and justify something other than variants of boltgun metal paint.

I'd go for Necrons since they get a new codex with shiny new models and rules. The Eldar codex is a bit outdated and a new codex is not yet at the horizon.

Eldars are outdated but so fun to play!

If you get a good playstyle and really learn to master them noone will have a chanse against you really.

If you fail to play your "cards" right, ull get smashed. So you have to make ur tactic really work good with every units in your army.

since the eldars are quite expensive and kinda squishy, u'll have to use every single point well.

If you have any questions regarding the Eldar i'd love to help ya. Just PM me!

New Necrons look really awesome, but Eldar are sweet as hell. I have been playing mech eldar for quite some time, and they are a blast to play. Yea their kind of tough, but once you get down a nice strategy and you get the feel for them, they become pretty deadly. Typically in a KP mission, when you win, its by no more than 2 or 3 KPs. Mission objectives with a mech eldar list really give you the edge because of their mobility.

Overall, I would wait a couple weeks and see how the new necrons play. Do some reading up on both armies then go for there...I still vote Eldar

I'm currently leaning towards Eldar. Mainly because i really like the models and have wanted to build an army for a really long time. I might just get some stuff at a time to paint up before i continue expanding it. I also need to come up with a cool colour theme. It's this part of getting a new army that i like the most, and the new necrons doesnt really do it for me i guess hehe.

I might still end up going with both though

I tell you one thing, Mechdar is boring as hell to play for me.

You pretty much Try to do as much damage as you can early on, then glide around and swoop down Objectives later.

Foot Eldar is more fun, but a lot more challenging.

Overall, just go with what army you want. Both are good in their own, unique ways.

Yah, if you are really drawn towards an army, just choose it, just be warned about the flaws people have mentioned...

Well, Eldar has some downsides in the current incarnation of the game: tanks are overpriced, troops have low toughness bar WG, number of units for competitive play is quite limited. Random game length is an issue for a Saim Hann or mech army.

Eldar require skill to play, they are fragile and have high points cost. However if you know your rules well and know what your opponent can do then half your battle is already won as you will be able to know what the enemy can do and make the best decisions to minimize loss to your forces.

They are in my opinion one of the most fun armies to play as they really do offer a challenge on the table top, they are also emensly rewarding to play, as pulling out a win can become difficult on those rare occasions the dice let you down (as they seem to do so often to me).

Necrons, i've had a read at the new codex and its difficult to see what people will come up with. i have yet to have a chance to sit down and write up a list for them but i have a feeling they will be OP based on points costs. Necron warriors are now only 13 points meaning there will be even more gauss flying around. Everything in the necron codex seems cheaper and better than before. i dont think they will be that challenging to play until a weakness is discovered and exploited.

I recommend Eldar from a painting and challenge point of view but Necrons if you like the models and ease of play.

I was seriously considering Necrons until i noticed that the basic Necron warriors didnt get new fresh models. Unless i can build another list based solely on immortals i might, but if i "have" to use regular necron warriors, im going nowhere near that army.

Good News! Immortals are troops now. Don't have to use warriors if you don't want to.

Yeah i know, just remains to be seen how valid a choice they actually are compared to warriors

Immortals are definitely a valid troop choice. But Warriors are just good pt filler even with their lowered armor save.

I wouldn't do necrons purely because so many noobs will be doing them! Wait for a while before doing them. Also, if you start eldar now, you can enjoy all the benefits of a new codex when they come out without being called a noob: I did this with dark eldar and am now doing it with tau.
