When I was 11 or 12 (20 + years ago...) I remember a friend lent me a document that had an entire account of the battle of terra. It ran into quite a few pages, but i cannot remember if it was a White Dwarf article, a publication, a book, or a rule book. Anyone got any idea's what it was because it was very vivid and pre-dates the HH series so alot of the facts have probably been re-written and called Artistic license.

I remember having a copy of 'Horus Heresy' - the original card boardgame, and the rulebook for that had a pretty detailed description.

Yep. Though lots of it will be changed. The horus heresy novel series is the proper story, and there's lots of contradictions in the old HH fluff. Dan Abnett himself said they were going through ALL old sources, and picking one that they will be going with, making that the canonical story.

There was a four page account printed in the White Dwarf that was showing the Horus Heresy card board game mentioned above. Its issue 161 and I think Bill King wrote it.

As I recall the HH board game one was repeated iwth some variations in quite a bit of old fluff... it had roots in the REalms of Chaos stuff... I even vaguely recall that Bill King had written it (he had a hand in alot of the very early 1st/2nd edition fluff). the HH boardgame one might have expanded on RoC. I know the collected visions one did have some changes - or at least they expanded on it.. some of the material is outright re-used even.

Yup, Bill King that jogs some memories, I also had the Deathwing Story in there which I think was Bill King as well. I have the book Visions of the Heresy, and it's account is not the same or even close to the one I read as a child. I specifically remember the Bloodthirster and the Angel's fight being amazing.

Was it the one that was seemingly mostly from Sanguinius's point of view? If so, I remember this too. It was awesome. Never managed to find it again though...

Yeah, thats the one. I wish I could find that piece. The early stuff was great because it was often detailed, but very narrow so it referenced many events without giving details. This allowed you a degree of freedom, in creating armies,chapters and your own fluff. These days it's very constrained by the very detailed and wide ranging canon....
