So I've been wanting to get into Black Templar for awhile. My favorite parts about them being the color scheme, and assault marines getting storm shields. So, after putting together a list and looking it over again, I've come to the simple conclusion that SS Assault marines are freakishly expensive. 5 marines, 5 shields, and 5 melta bombs runs you 195 pts. For that many points I could about 12 regular marines (initiates). I guess it has the same problem that all assault marines tend to have (better choices available), but I'd really like to field something like that. Is there any real tactical use for this kind of assault marine set up?

Frankly, no. They still die to anti-infantry fire. I'd just run them with meltabombs if you want to run them at all.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Templars are great. Preferred Enemy or S5 army-wide are incredibly good. The only reason they appear overpriced is because you're taking Storm Shields. That's a terrible idea because it jacks their point cost through the roof and reduces the number of attacks they get, thus hamstringing the benefit of the aforementioned Preferred Enemy or S5.

That being said, Assault Marines are a bit overpriced in general, and you'd be better off with more Crusader squads in Rhinos, who get both BP & CCW, and can hold objectives.

They take room available for typhoons. That is why you should take them.

They are overpriced but I still like the idea of a flying meat shield.
