Short and sweet.
When was the Standard template construct for the storm shield found?
I'm making a pre-heresy luna wolves army and wondering whether I can use any. They would be sparse in the army, since I'm using the space wolves codex and they cost too much to be widespread on my wolf guard terminators.
I'm aware that they are not in the chaos codex, but I'm just curious about whether that means they had no storm shields originally or whether they have just lost them over time.

Not certain on this, but I think they were made after the HH.
Wait for someone more knowledgable to show up.

Thank you
I thought that was probably true!
It may just be wishful thinking that they would have been around then...

Im also quite certain it wasnt until after or during the last days of the Horus Heresy. It explains why Chaos marines dont get them, and as far as I recall, no Legion has them in use during the Great Crusade.

The new IA book Apocalypse 2nd Ed has this in the entry about the Comtemptor Dreadnought:
"The Contemptor pattern featured many systems in common with the dread battle-automata of the fabled Legio Cybernetica, including techno-arcana such as field generator technology of the kind that would later be refined in the Storm Shields"

Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos
"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001

So if the technology was around then it wouldn't be unreasonable to say there were storm shields too?
That's really interesting!
Imagine a storm shield dreadnought!

Doubt it, it clearly states, later refined in Storm Shields, which means they didn't have them at the time.

At the same time, the Contemptor is the oldest pattern of Dread...It's not the only pre-heresy dreadnaught, there were several other marks after it, up to Mk. III-IV...I think.

In "age of darkness" in the story with the loyalist iron warriors, the ultramarine champion has a storm shield (this is during heresy).

So it would be logical to assume that, while we know they might have been around by the middle of the Heresy, they were less common and 'newer technology' than in the 41M

Though it still doesn't explain why Chaos can't use them... inless the real reason for the Heresy was they didn't get Storm Shields and were annoyed.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it. |

He could have simply had a combat shield that the author mis-named.

True but you could use combat shields to count as storm shields in a pre heresy army and say the shield technology was better back then (space wolf 'storm shields' look like combat shields).

Well, land speeders were new technology during the Heresy, but the argument is that they were so new that no functioning Chaos ones exist. Maybe this is in the same ballpark?
