I started playing 40k a little bit ago and for my first army I decided to go with Dark Eldar. The people at the place where I bought my first models were wondering what other armies I have and I told them none, just DE. They said that they were very difficult to play, is this true and am I stupid for choosing them?

No way man, DE are a great army now. They have their draw backs like any other army, but they can really dish out the hurt. They are not SM so you can't charge across the table without any worry, however between cover, feel no pain and Web way portals you should be able to get to the enemy and hit them. It might take a few games for you to get the hang of them, but if you stick with them it will be worth it.

No, you're not an idiot.

They are a tough army to play, but if you persevere you will learn a lot.

It's much better than learning with an army of invincible warriors with nothing to fear.

Ok, are Haemonculi and big blocks of troops good, or should I hide smaller blocks in raiders?

After you learn how to play with dark elder, they are extremely nasty. I got back into 40k with them, and now they are awesome. You just have to be careful with them.

I get it, so they are rewarding, but take a while to get used to?

While some armies are harder to learn than others it isn't by much in 40k. The reason SM are the starter army is due to the durability of the troops and the fact they pretty much cover all the rules somewhat evenly. Everyone else is just more specialised meaning you can pretty much start anywhere and get the hang of the game and that faction's play style.

This Thread is probably the best place to start as a Dark Eldar player.

Dark Eldar are a win big, or Lose big Army. So, don't get discouraged if you get trounced for a while, until you get up to speed. They are also very unforgiving of Mistakes. Once you find your groove, I'm sure you'll find them to be a very rewarding army.

HIDING IN METAL BAWKSES!

You want to stay mobile. With your heaviest vehicle having only AV11 on it, they will wilt under fire. But, you get pain tokens. Once you get just one pain token on a Archon he will kill pretty much everything he attacks.
Just search around and see what style you like the most.

The sink.

Eldar are squishy so it takes time to learn how to play them. But once you learn how, you can trounce marines like nobody's business.

I'm ok with squishyness. The pain tokens help that right?

Yes, I believe after 1 or 2 pain tokens that squad gets FNP

A bit, but most models are still only T3 so anything strength 6 or greater will ignore FnP. It's a nice bonus to have...but don't rely on it.

Dark Eldar are very much a glass cannon. They hit hard and they hit fast....but can't take much of a beating in return. Speed, utilizing cover, and correct target prioritization of enemy targets are essential. DE aren't very forgiving to making mistakes (SM and other armies can get away with some screw-ups), you mess up with tactics/strategy etc, you're going to pay for it pretty heftily.

They're more difficult to play than other armies, since they're very fragile. However, I think it might end up teaching you a "sink or swim" mentality with 40k and get you better at the game faster. Don't sweat it.
