Quick question before I use my washes for the first time.

Paint them over the recesses, basically areas you want to emphasise. For example you can wash the hem in a coat to make it look like an actual divide.
I'm not a great painter though you really need someone more experienced for how to use washes effectively.

Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?

good advice so far. dont be afraid to wash your washes down too, start slow with light coats then build up. thats the best way to learn.

I sometimes paint something a light color like white and I use them as a dye and you can also use them to make something look dirty and their also nice to use to cover up mistakes.
